Origin - legend
Female genital piercing has no major mythic origin. But there are many different types. What you personally can have pierced will depend on personal anatomy. A good body piercer should be able to advise you as to what will suit and the types of jewelry that will be most comfortable or visually striking. Generally though, both the inner and outer labia can be pierced. So, too, can the clitoris and clitoris hood. For most ladies, the hood is advised rather than the clitoris itself. The clit hood is probably the favorite genital piercing with the women - because (when correctly placed), the ball on a B.C.R. (ball closure ring) will rest over the clitoris itself, providing the wearer with pleasant stimulation when walking, etc. Men tend to prefer the erotic appeal of the inner labia piercings - these are common, too, as many women get them to please their partners.
Method
Not all piercers use an anaesthetic, I personally do. N.B. In Britain, it is illegal to inject anaesthetic unless you are a registered medical practitioner, but anaesthetic sprays are legal and their use is widespread. For genital piercings, I use a strong lignocane-based anaesthetic spray, which numbs the area prior to piercing. Women have often told me that their genital piercings hurt less than their nipples. And some have said they hurt less than ears or noses. Many find the experience to be a turn-on rather than a pain.
The area is cleaned and marked with an indelible pen. For inner or outer labia, the piercing is more esthetic if done as a pair. Both the entry and exit holes are marked for outers, only the entry hole need be marked for inner labia. The area is then lightly clamped with a triangular-shaped forceps, as opposed to a teardrop. A teardrop can be used for inner labia piercings.
There are several different piercing methods, warning never allow anyone to perform these piercings with an ear piercing gun; there are still some very unwise individuals who will try and perform them this way. Piercings done this way may be too shallow and are easily misplaced. And they could completely grow in, become infected and painfull and require surgical treatment to remove the unsuitable stud. Believe me - it does happen.
The correct method is with an appropriate gauged hollow needle. By this, I mean one that is slightly thicker than the jewelry to be placed. There are two types of hollow needles: the first is simply a hollow metal sharp; also available are introvenus canula's that have a thin plastic sleeve over them. It is the latter type of needle that I personally use. The needle is guided by hand in one easy motion that will hurt less than a blood test. The piercing is now done, the forceps are removed and the chosen jewelry can now be inserted into the hollow needle or the needle sleeve once the needle itself has been removed.
A gentle tugging motion is all that will be felt as the jewelry is slid through the piercing - in the opposite direction to the way the needle went through. Note that the clitoris and its hood may be pierced both horizontally and vertically.
Types of acceptable jewelry

There are two specific types of genital jewelry. And some variations. Silver (or any other metal that tarnishes) should not be worn. Only jewelry made from highest grade Surgical Stainless Steel, or solid (not plated) gold should be worn in any fresh piercing. Gold jewelry should be of at least 18ct. The two jewelry types are the barbell and the ball closure ring. Hinged (earings) should not be worn. A bananabell with equal sized balls is also acceptable. A barbell is recomended if the piercing is vertical, and is often more comfortable for larger women's outer labia - rings can rub against the inner thigh. Normally a barbell in any bodypiercing will heal quicker than a ring, as there is nothing sticking out to catch or rub on clothes.
This Body Piercing internet article was written by Dylan, who has been a full time professional Body piercer since 1993. He works from the Labyrinth studio in Portsmouth, England.
All the piercings shown in these pages were performed by him, unless stated otherwise.
And he has worn most of the piercings too, so he knows what it's like to get them as well as give them.
