In a move that that is expected to lead to a Jordan driver announcement at Suzuka, BAR have announced that Takuma Sato has been dropped from their testing line-up.
The Japanese star was set to test with the Honda powered team this week at Mugello, but the F3 driver's session has been cancelled adding substantially to the rumours that he will be announced as Jordan Honda's second driver in 2002 at the upcoming Japanese Grand Prix.
Eddie Jordan would not comment on the chances of signing the most successful British F3 driver of recent times, but sources close to BAR are alleged to have confirmed that their young star is “close to another team.”
Sato has long been a favourite of Honda and has had their backing throughout his career. "He's a Japanese driver. We like him very much, we always support drivers who have speed. I hope he can do well this year," said Kazutoshi Nishikawa, the Director of Honda Racing’s R&D.
Winning the battle for his services is seen as vital for Jordan in their fight to keep their works engine status. Many in the F1 paddock believe the Japanese marque will drop either Bar or Jordan in 2003 and put all their effort behind the remaining team. The fact that Jordan will have a ‘Honda approved’ driver on his books mean it is much less likely to be the Irish team that the push.
Meanwhile, Jordan will give another test to the other two young talents they have been looking over. F3000 champion, Justin Wilson will get another test with the Jordan Honda team on Thursday with Narain Karthikeyan taking over on Friday as they fight for the chance of a test seat for 2002.
Both talents drove for Jordan last month at Silverstone and both impressed. Wilson probably shaded it, but he did have two days to Karthikeyan’s one. "A good finish in the first test has won me a second and I'm delighted to be given another chance to test with the Jordan team," Karthikeyan stated.
"Hopefully this will help me in my ambition to be a Formula One driver. If I can put on a good show, maybe they might consider me for a seat next year or even as a test driver."
