With the weight of the hopes and expectations of a nation and one of the largest global car manufacturers on his shoulders, Takuma Sato already has a lot to live up to – and he hasn’t even got fitted for his Jordan racing suit yet!
His new boss, Eddie Jordan, is hoping however that the young man will be given time to settle in before the media begin sharpening any knives next season.
He knows that time will be needed to settle into his new environment. "We can all talk and say he’ll be the next world champion, but please give the guy a chance to breathe. We’ve all seen how difficult it can be for young drivers."
Despite his well documented links to Jordan’s engine supplier, Sato has earned his chance after a stunning season in the British F3 championship where he claimed a record 12 victories, sowing up the title way before the season’s end.
The move to an Anglo/Irish operation could be a bit of a culture shock for the Sato, but he has done as much as he can to acclimatise. The decision to race in the British F3 championship, rather than a European or Asian series will help and Eddie is confident he will fit right in. “Taku is probably going to be better prepared than most. He has honed himself into a very positive professional package, and the good thing is that he has the vital ingredient – speed,” he stated.
Jordan could have signed Sato for a year with additional contract extensions if he performed, but that would not have been in anybody’s best interest. "We signed him for two years because one year doesn’t give you the chance to do anything,” explained Eddie. “All it does is pile on extra pressure that’s not necessary. He knows he’s in the team on talent, so why place another question mark against something you already feel strongly on?"
It could well be a baptism of fire, though, with the rookie finding himself up against Italian hotshot, Giancarlo Fisichella. The Italian ace has never been outperformed by a teammate in his 5 years in F1 and will be looking to continue the run. Sato is aware of this, but will try and use Fisichella’s experience and speed to his advantage. "My team-mate Giancarlo is very strong and quick. I’m not saying I’ll immediately be at the same level as him, but I will try to catch him up, and hopefully I will also learn many things from him."
