Justin Wilson, Britain’s great new driving hope, has lost his chance to step up to Formula One with the Jordan team with the announcement that Takuma Sato, the young Japanese driver who won the British Formula Three Championship this season, will drive for the Irish team in 2002 & 2003.
Wilson has impressed the team hugely at two test sessions, at Silverstone and in Italy, but Sato’s claims to be the replacement for Jean Alesi emerged are stronger, many believe because he is sponsored by Honda, Jordan’s engine supplier.
Wilson has looked one of the strongest British prospects of recent years since winning the Formula 3000 title, considered closest to Formula One, this year with a points total that beat the record set by Juan Pablo Montoya. However he is trying to step into a sport where money and influence are often more important than speed or talent.
In a comment clearly pointed at Sato and his ally in Honda Wilson said, “I have nothing against drivers like that, it is a way into Formula One. That’s life and it has always been the same in Formula One. I know I will just have to show I can do it and try some other way.”
The decision will be a big disappointment for Benson and Hedges, Jordan’s title sponsor, who were pressuring for a British driver to try to create the same buzz in the UK that Damon Hill did when he was part of the Jordan set-up.
Jonathan Palmer, Wilson’s manager, will now have to work on other ways to find Wilson a place in Formula One. “Justin is very calm and anybody who saw the Formula 3000 Championships this season will know he can race,” he said. “Not just that, but he raced thoughtfully, often taking a podium or points finish instead of racing rashly for a victory. The fact that his Formula 3000 record was better than Montoya’s, and better than any other British driver in the history of the series, speaks volumes for his ability. He just needs his chance.”
The chance at Jordan has fallen to Sato and Wilson looks set to decline a test seat, if offered, as the young Briton looks West. Speaking before the Jordan announcement he said. “If there is no place available for me next season [at Jordan], I might try my luck in America. I certainly intend to go to a couple of this year's remaining races, to chat to Champ Car teams."
