Eddie Jordan has said he will have no hesitation in replacing his two drivers if they fail to live up to expectations this season.
The contracts of Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Jarno Trulli both run out at the end of the year and Jordan will be studying their performances closely before offering new deals.
He has admitted that he is under tremendous pressure to deliver the goods when the season kicks off in Melbourne at the weekend, and there will be no reward for lack of effort or mediocrity. "F1 is now big business as well as a sport, and everyone has to pull together. It's easy to become a bankrupt hero.
"We have a huge responsibility to sponsors, shareholders and fans to strive for excellence and it is up to all of us to make this season a success."
He admits that there is no reason to blame Heinz-Harald or Jarno for the disappointment of 2000. "Last year was a poor one by our standards and we took a lot of lashings. If I felt for one moment that either driver was not making the best use of the equipment - or anyone else in the team wasn't playing their part - they would be out.
We all made a few mistakes last season and in the long term we can learn from those, but if they are repeated we all get slated."
Despite his warning to his drivers and team Jordan is confident that his Silverstone-based outfit has produced an ultra-competitive car and that both his drivers will use their talents to the maximum.
With probably a slight bias he believes Frentzen and Trulli are the best driver pairing in the pit-lane and the introduction of the Honda powerplant gives a great foundation for good results.
Pre-season testing has gone very well with the drivers completing over 5,300kms since the EJ11 launch, so Eddie is optomistic. "I am not going to make any pre-season boasts about how well we are going to do in case it all backfires. But I am quietly confident.
"We've just been getting on with our testing programme which has gone like clockwork."
