Over two hundred Jordan guests, both sponsors and members of Club Jordan, attended Tuesday's test at Silverstone. Aside from seeing the drivers in action and a walk down the pitlane, they had the unexpected treat of a twenty minute question and answer session with Jordan's new Technical Director, Eghbal Hamidy.
Hamidy came to talk to Jordan's visitors whilst they enjoyed their lunch in a hospitality suite overlooking the pit lane used by Jordan during testing.
Eghbal Hamidy joined Jordan as the team's Technical Director at the start of the 2001 Formula One season. He brought over a decade of experience in F1, having also previously worked at Williams for eight years, the Stewart-Ford team from mid 1996 as Head of Aerodynamics, before joining Arrows as Chief Designer in 1999.
As a high-flying student of Imperial College London, his early B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees were in Aeronautical Engineering. A slight change of direction led to a Ph.D in Road Vehicle Aerodynamics, for which he was coincidentally sponsored by Honda - from here he was able to make the move into F1 with Williams.
He spoke about his enjoyment of working at Jordan and how his experience from his time at Williams, Stewart and Arrows should help his work with his team. Hamidy said, “I wouldn't like to suggest I alone can bring the results. It is all about team work, and me working with our Head of Engineering, Tim Holloway, and all the engineers and designers. But it is certainly fair to say that the experience I have learnt working with the likes of Adrian Newey and Patrick Head can only be good for my work here at Jordan.”
Without giving too much of the game away, he also discussed how Jordan works over a race weekend to decide pit stop strategies for drivers Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Jarno Trulli. Then, going on to speak about Jordan's new race engineers David Brown and Gabriele delli Colli, Hamidy said, “”What I have been so pleasantly surprised by is just how well the new team of race engineers is working together. Usually, you expect new relationships between drivers and engineers and amongst the engineers themselves to take at least a year to really gel, but when you sit in our briefings during race weekends, it is as if Heinz, Jarno, David and Gabriele are a team who have been together for some time. I think that is a reflection of the environment we have at Jordan.”
Over 600 guests and sponsors are being entertained by Jordan over this week's three and a half day test. A combination of sponsors and Club Jordan members, many flying in specially from Ireland, have had the chance not only to watch testing and walk in the F1 pit lane, but also to enjoy tours of the Jordan garage at Silverstone, and the team's HQ across the road.
