17th January - Alesi not to take a role with Jordan for 2002.

Goodbye Jean.
Jean Alesi has decided to sever all ties with Jordan, his last Formula 1 team.

The French veteran of 201 Grands Prix hung up his helmet at the end of the season after 13 years in the sport. There was talk that he would stay on at Jordan to advise his inexperienced replacement Takuma Sato but Alesi has now decided against that.
He told Autosport magazine, "We talked about it but when you look at what Sato is doing in the car, he’s not really uncomfortable at all.
"It would not be fair of me to keep a position with Jordan, whether he was OK or not, waiting to take his place."

With 5 days testing under his belt, Sato is regularly within 0.75sec of his much more experienced teammate, Giancarlo Fisichella. The Japanese driver has settled well into the team and Jordan are thought to be very happy with his progess to date.

Alesi will race for Mercedes in German touring cars in 2002. He ruled out doing any testing for Jordan over the course of the year. He said: "I will not drive for Jordan. I have a contract with Mercedes for the DTM. I will concentrate on doing my best for them."
But Alesi said he would be keen to try a McLaren-Mercedes F1 car if given the opportunity.
