Giancarlo Fisichella is potentially faster than Michael Schumacher, Jean Alesi has said.
Ex-Jordan driver Alesi reckons that the current Jordan driver is more naturally gifted than any other driver in F1 – and that includes the four-times world champion Schumacher.
He told the latest edition of F1 Racing magazine, "I honestly think Giancarlo is better than Michael in terms of natural talent. He has incredible car control and an ability to concentrate on strategy without losing speed.
"Except in terms of working to maximise his potential – which Michael does best – Giancarlo is the best driver in Formula 1."
Another ex-Jordan driver agrees. Damon Hill, who replaced Fisichella when the Italian left Jordan for Benetton at the end of 1997, said. "I’ve always thought Giancarlo was one of the most underrated drivers in F1.
"A man of his ability should be in a better car than a Jordan. He could be truly fantastic."
Fisichella, 29, has raced in 91 grands prix but has yet to win. He does have a creditable nine podiums to his name, including five second places and a pole position, but will be hoping to step onto the top step of the podium in 2002.
He was unfortunate to leave Jordan at the end of 1997 and therefore missed the chance to drive the race winning cars of ’98 and ’99. Hopefully his return to Jordan will also bring a return to winning ways for the Irish team.
