1st February - Heavy crash for Sato at Barcelona.

Takuma crashes but is fine.
A busy Friday morning session was brought to a halt for Takuma Sato today as he crashed heavily into the barriers on turn 11 at Barcelona's Catalunya circuit. Coincidently it is the same corner that wrecked Michael Schumacher's Ferrari on Wednesday, but this time it definitely was not because of 'driver error'.

The Japanese ace's front axle broke was after just 12 laps and severely damaged the left side of his 2001-spec Jordan-Honda as he slammed into the barriers.

Sato, who was unhurt in the crash, came out in the afternoon session to imptrove his time and finish the day in fourth place and was glad to get some decent miles under his belt. “It was nice to have a proper test with the new car, which I was able to drive for the first two days. We had a couple of problems, which have prevented us from getting a lot of running. But it’s important to get to know the new car and the last few days were positive and progressive.
"I have been doing some long runs, close to a race simulation and also some qualifying runs, which gave me an excellent feeling. Unfortunately today the axle broke on the last corner and I had quite a big shunt at around 250kph. I’m totally fine, but frustrated because I was doing a really fast lap time when it happened!”

Sato worked on brake and tyre testing with the EJ11, completing a total of 47 laps with a fastest lap time of 1:20.52.

Things were also not great for Sato's team mate Giancarlo Fisichella who looked so quick at Barcelona two weeks ago when he was still driving the 2001 spec Jordan.
He had another disappointing day in the new EJ12 and various small problems meant he finished the day over 3 seconds off the Sauber pace earlier in the week. He is still upbeat about the potential of the car though, “We had a few small problems today, but that is normal and you expect it when the car is new. During the four-day test we didn’t complete as many laps as we usually would at a test, but given the track time we had, our progress has been good and we are very close to our target lap time for the stage we’re at. I’m quite optimistic, but there is a lot of work to do in the next few tests.”
