The
British band that went from minor cult status to complete obscurity
in a career which, like so many of their songs, started slowly and
gradually petered out. They put in 4 gruelling years on the road,
released 3 classic albums and terrorised most of continental Europe
- not to mention a brief sojourn over the pond (unable to resist Canada's
challenge to drink it dry).
Their
music is a curious mish-mash of styles, combining indie, ethnic, folk,
punk, and thrash - to name but four. Flying in the face of received
music biz wisdom, they sing in Ukrainian.
I spent a great deal of time with the Ukrainians. I was present at
most of their gigs, I travelled in their van, (sometimes I drove it),
I helped the road "crew" (Gordon or Johnny) take down the
gear after concerts, I was backstage, I spent many sleepless nights
in hotel rooms, we drank together. I was about as close as anyone
can get to a band without actually being a musician.
Here
are some photos and memories of those times. I'll be adding more when
I can find/remember them.
