24. Samuel M.⁴ Newell (Jane³, Francis², James¹) He was born 22 March 1813. He died 8 March 1882 at Sayre, PA. He married Polly Maria Green. Based on the 1850 and 1860 census records, she was born about 1816 in PA.

During the 1850 U.S. census, his occupation was farming and he was reported to own real estate worth $900. In 1860, he owned real estate worth $860 and had personal property worth $100. [19]

According to the 1850 U.S. census, his occupation was farming and in 1850 he was reported to own real estate worth $400. In 1860, his real property was worth $800 and his personal property was worth $400. [20]

26. James W.⁴ Newell (Jane³, Francis², James¹) He was born 22 February 1819. He died at Rockfield, Indiana about 1887. He married Susan [-?-]. She was born about 1830 in PA. According to the 1850 U.S. census, his occupation was farming and was reported to own real estate worth $400. [21]

30. Jane⁴ Watts (John³, Francis², James¹) She was born 13 November 1809. She was married by Justice Asa Pratt to John Milton Smiley on 25 December 1838 in Canton, PA. He was the son of John Smiley (born 5 February 1783 at Hanover, PA., died 5 June 1822 at Canton, PA.) and Susan Stone (daughter of Benjamin Stone and Elizabeth Wilcox of Franklin, PA.). [22]

31. William⁴ Watts (John³, Francis², James¹) He was born 18 June 1811 and died 21 February 1862, Union Township, Tioga Co., PA. He was married to Hannah Comfort. She was born in 1813. [23]

32. Elizabeth⁴ Watts (John³, Francis², James¹) She was born 3 February 1813. She was married in Canton by Justice Asa Pratt on 11 October 1831 to Oliver Sellard. He was the son of Stephen D. Sellard (born 1781 at Norwich, Connecticut, died May 1852) and Polly Spencer (born 1782, died 1869).[24]

33. John B.⁴ Watts (John³, Francis², James¹) He was born 14 December 1814 in Bradford Co., PA, and died 3 April 1903 at Ottumwa, Iowa. The 1860 US Census lists his occupation as farmer. He married Catherine Rogers in Bradford Co., PA. She was born 2 September 1818 in Bradford Co., PA, and died at Wapello Co., IA. Her parents were Roine Rogers and Hannah Landon.[25]

	120.	iv	Sophia Watts born about 1848. The exact relationship of this individual to this family is unsure.

34. Thomas Murray⁴ Watts (John³, Francis², James¹) He was born 13 December 1817. He died 30 July 1893 at Granville, PA., and was buried at the Granville Cemetery on 1 August 1893. His death certificate recorded that he was a white male, his occupation was farming, and that he died after seven weeks of chronic diarrhea. He married Edith Polen in 1841. She was born 2 Febraury 1824 at Wilkes-Barre, PA, and died 22 February 1893 at Sayler, Bradford Co., PA. [26]

36. James⁴ Watts (John³, Francis², James¹) He was born about 1822 in PA. James Watts was recorded as being a farmer from 1850-1880. It is believed that he may be the James Watts who died of heart failure after an illness of one week, at age 82, on 28 February 1904 and was buried at Canton about 1 March 1904 at Canton.

In 1860 the family held real property valued at $1,500 and personal property worth $500. By 1870, the real property was valued at $4,000 and the personal property had increased to $1,350.

He was married to Phoebe Comfort. She was born about 1821 in PA. [27]

38. Robert A.⁴ Watts (John³, Francis², James¹) He was born 6 April 1830 in PA. He died in 1913. In the 1860, he held real estate valued at $500 and personal property valued at $300. Although Robert A. Watts and Harriet Watts were living in different dwellings during the 1860 census, they were living in the same residence during the 1870 census. By 1870, his real estate holdings had increased to $2,500 and his personal property had increased in value to $1,070. In 1900, Robert was listed as a widower and was living with his son Cory. During 1910, his he was listed as being farmer, owning his own farm free of mortgage, and being a Civil War veteran.

He married Harriet E. Bennett about 1852.She was born about 1834/1835 in Canton, PA. She died of consumption, after an illness of nine weeks, on 22 December 1899. She was buried at Canton on 25 December 1899. Her parents were Thomas Bennett and Elizabeth [-?-].[28]

39. Henry Spalding⁴ Mercur (Mary³, Francis², James¹) He was born on 29 August 1811. He died 7 August 1869. He worked as a merchant with Ellis Lewis, then later worked with his brothers. During the 1850 U.S. census, his occupation was listed as a merchant and he was reported to have real estate valued at $15,000. In the 1860 census, his occupation was again listed as merchant and he was reported to own real estate valued at $20,000 and personal property worth $2,000.

He was married 17 April 1836 to Sarah Azubah Guernsey of Oxford, New York. She was born 18 August 1815 and died 19 February 1874. [29]

	140.	iv	James Louis Mercur born about 1843 in PA. In the 1860 census, his occupation was listed as clerk.
	141.	v	Sarah Adalaide Mercur born about 1848 in PA, married Maj. Addison Mason on 15 Oct. 1868.[30]

41. Mahlon Clark⁴ Mercur (Mary³, Francis², James¹) He was born 6 February 1816. He died in Towanda on 17 October 1905. He started in business at the age of 12 when he sold his first tract of land. By the age of 16 he was buying and shipping lumber. In 1838 he was elected councilman, an office he held for several years. In 1847 he erected a three-story brick block on the southeast corner of Main and Pine Streets. In 1877 he was appointed Deputy Collector of U.S. Revenues. He operated the North Branch Canal for shipping of lumber and farm produce. He later was instrumental in developing a railroad line up the Susquehanna Valley. He was also engaged in the banking business, first in the Towanda bank, then as president of the Mercur bank. He was a member of the Episcopal church.

During the 1850 U.S. census, he was recorded living alone with his son in Towanda. His occupation was listed as being a merchant and he held real estate valued at $25,000. During the 1860 U.S. census, he was listed as being a farmer with real estate valued at $30,000 and personal property worth $30,000. His wife's real estate was valued at $1,500.

He was married first to Helen Kingsbury in 1839. She was the daughter of Col. Joseph Kingsbury. She died in 1841. He married Annie Hubbard Jewett 22 February 1853. She was born 10 (16) May 1832 in Massachusetts, and died 7 October 1901. One child was born to the first marriage and six children were born to the second marriage. [31]

146.	ii	Helen Mercur born about 1855 in Towanda, Bradfornd Co., PA., married the Rev. George H. Rosenmiller, rector of the Episcopal Church at Niagara Falls, New York.

148.	iv	William H. Mercur physician and surgeon at Pittsburgh, PA.
149.	v	Hiram T. Mercur in the cotton business in the south.

42. Ulysses⁴ Mercur (Mary³, Francis², James¹) He was born 12 August 1818. He died 6 June 1887. He worked on his father's farm and attended school in the winter. About 1838, he entered Jefferson College to study law and graduated first in his class in 1842. He was admitted to the bar and to law practice on 4 September 1843. On 19 March 1861 he was appointed by Governor Curtin to fill the vacancy in the 13th Judicial district. In October 1861, he was elected to a full term without opposition. In 1864 he was elected to Congress. He served for four consecutive terms. "He was a member of the Judiciary Committee and took an active part in preparing the reconstruction measures rendered necessary by the secession of the Southern States." In 1872 he was nominated to the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania. He became Chief Justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court in January 1883.

During the 1850 U.S. Census, he was recorded as living with the family of his brother Henry S. Mercur. In the 1860 census, he was listed as being a lawyer with real estate valued at $16,000 and personal property valued at $7,500. .

He married Sarah Simpson Davison 12 June 1850. She was the daughter of General John Davis (b 1788) of Bucks County, PA, and Amy Hart) She was born 10 November 1822 and died 20 April 1896. [32]

+	152.	i	Rodney A.⁵ Mercurborn 29 September 1852 at Towanda, PA.
	153.	ii	John D. Mercur born 15 July 1853. He attended public schools, studied at Phillips Exeter Academy, Harvard University, and graduated from Jefferson Medical College with an MD in 1878. He practiced one year in the Philadelphia Hospital. Returned to Towanda in June of 1889. He was a member of Sons of the Revolution, the Medical Society of Philadelphia and the Episcopal Church.
	154.	iii	Mary E. Mercur born about 1855 in PA., married Benjamin Franklin Eshleman of Lancaster, PA.
