The Descendents of Richard Gallagher
of Castlefin, County Donegal, Ireland
25. Edward5 Gallagher (John4, Andrew3, John2, Richard1) He was born 27 October 1839, died 20 September 1924, and is buried in the Gallagher plot in Strabane, Co. Tyrone. [22]
"Edward went to work in U.S.A. and having made money there through sheer hard work he returned home. He built a large shop in Strabane, Co. Tyrone, & started a shirt factory. His wife Harriet (Annie) came to work in the shop as a milliner & they were eventually married." Richard Gallagher's (#12) diaries record that Edward went to the United States in early 1867. His uncle Richard sent for Edward in September of 1869 and Edward returned to Ireland on 17 November 1869. He opened his shop in Strabane on 21 December 1869.[23]
"When Edward decided to go the the U.S.A. he stayed in Dublin en route with my maternal grandparents, William & Elizabeth Boyle, who had moved from Castlefinn on their marriage. It so happened that Edward was with them the day my mother (Sarah Boyle) was born 30th December 1866. Edward was invited to be her god-father. More than 30 years afterwards he was best man at her wedding to his brother William [#31] and god-father to their eldest child, Cherry. When my mother was 4 years old and the family had returned on a sea-side holiday to Donegal, Edward walked 80 miles [round trip distance from Castlefinn] to visit them [at Donegal] with a present for his god-child tucked under his arm. Edward stayed in U.S.A. from early 1867 until late 1869. At one time there he traveled the countryside selling books. When Edward returned from U.S.A. he became a very successful business man. The shop he opened was quite extensive - later on he built a factory also. After he married they lived over the shop for sometime. It was customary then for apprentices to live-in while training. The girls were very well supervised and always escorted to and from concerts or dances."[24]
At the "Front of shop were counters for mens wear and curtains, back for ladies. At that time ladies had hats made for them of silk materials. He had [employed] a millner from Youghal whom he married. He gave her no money, just paid all the bills. ... Grandfather used to walk out to the factory daily 3 miles at 82 years old. ... He never drove, came to Crossmolina complete with chauffer who couldn't eat in kitchen or dining room & had to have a special table in kitchen hall (about 6 ft wide-hall). Danny McGarrigle was [the] chauffers name."[25]
When the new Church of the Immaculate Conception was built in Strabane about 1900, "Edward presented a set of the Stations of the Cross - a very beautiful set which is still in place there. At the time they cost over £200 which was a large sum then. They were very religious people and attended Daily Mass."[26]
He married Harriet (Annie) Thomas. They had at least twelve children. She died 21 April 1934 and is buried in the Gallagher plot in Stabane, Ireland. Her father was a Quaker.[27]
26. Catherine5 Gallagher (John4, Andrew3, John2, Richard1) She was born 5 April 1842. She married Richard Shaw. They lived in Scotland.[28]
28. Bridget5 Gallagher (John4, Andrew3, John2, Richard1) She was born 5 October 1847 and died in 1916. She married Charles Kelly. After her marriage she stayed on in the old homestead, Dresnagh, Castlefinn, Co. Donegal. Buried at the Donneyloop Cemetery.[29]
29. Rebecca5 Gallagher (John4, Andrew3, John2, Richard1) She was born 20 June 1850 and died about 1934. She married John Doherty.[30]
30. Sarah5 Gallagher (John4, Andrew3, John2, Richard1) She was born 25 March 1853. She married James Mulhern. They emigrated to the United States.[31]
93. | i | Francis6 Mulhern married [-?-] Edgar. She died in 1992 at age 95 in Philadelphia. She died after slipping in the bathroom and falling into the bathtub. She was unable to free herself and remained there for several hours. Finally someone came to her aid and broke down the door. She died later in hospital.[32] |
31. William5 Gallagher (John4, Andrew3, John2, Richard1) He was born 6 Sept 1855 and died 26 June 1925 at age 69. He is buried in the Gallagher plot at Castlefinn, Co. Donegal, Ireland. When William left school he lived with his uncle Richard Gallagher (#12). William worked with his uncle Richard Gallagher and inherited the farm and factory upon Richard's death in 1891.[33]
"Apparently Woodrow Wilson [28th President of the United States] had his 'roots' in Co. Tyrone and was a personal friend of my father [William Gallagher, #31] and I presume of your [Sean Furniss] great-grandfather Edward [#25]. I have a photograph of him which had been sent to my father. ... In a diary of my father (now mislaid) I read that a letter had arrived from W. Wilson enclosing his photograph. Unfortunately the letter was not preserved." The message with the photograph reads "This savage loves his native shore. With best wishes to all at Castlefin and sweet Strabane for a Happy + Prosperous New Year. Your old friend Woodrow Wilson. New York. Christmas Eve. 1913."[34]
His first wife was Alice Houlihan. She was born in 1869. She came down with tuberculosis and died 22 May 1895 at age 26 (noted on tombstone). She is buried in the Gallagher plot at Castlefinn, Co. Donegal, Ireland. William Gallagher and Alice Houlihan had one child, Rebecca, who was 14 months old when her mother died.[35]
His second wife was Sarah E. Boyle who was born 30 December 1866. She died 10 February 1947 at age 80 years (noted on tombstone) and is buried in the Gallagher plot at Castlefinn, Co. Donegal, Ireland. William's brother Edward Gallagher was her godfather and [30 years later] the best man at the wedding. Andrew Gallagher (#13, William's uncle) was not in favor of William's marriage to Sarah Boyle. "He thought she would not be able for life in the country & felt that my father [William Gallagher] should marry a strong country girl. Andrew said he would cut my father out of his will if the marriage took place. This he did. He left his money in trust to his housekeeper. She was to get the income for her life-time and after her death it was to go to any of Edward's (#25) daughters who were widows. His housekeeper survived him by over 35 years." All his children were born in Castlefinn, Co. Donegal.[36]
Sarah's parents were William Boyle and Elizabeth Flanagan who were married on 18 February 1855. William Boyle died 1 October 1896, age 70. Elizabeth Flanagan drown 6 September 1872, age 39. Sarah's Aunt Rose Flanagan married her husband's uncle Richard Gallagher. Sarah's paternal grandparents were Sarah Kivliken (Kavanugh?) and Michael Boyle and her maternal grandparents were Ellen Given and Thaddeus Flanagan. [37]
