The Sons of Confederate Veterans is a tax exempt educational origanization which promotes:
Our camp is named for Gen. Leonidas Polk, C.S.A. who died at Pine Mountain on June 14, 1864 prior to the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain. He was struck in the chest by an artilary shell. We are happy to all visitors come and see what we are all about, and learn about our Proud Southern Heritage.
Membership in the Sons of Confederate Veterans is open to all male descendants of any veteran who served honorably in the Confederate armed forces or Government. Membership can be obtained through either direct or collateral family lines and kinship to a veteran must be documented. The minimum age for membership is 12. Proof of kinship to a Confederate soldier can take different forms. The easiest method is to contact the archives of the state from which the soldier fought and obtain a copy of the veteran's military service record. All Southern states archives have microfilm records of the soldiers who fought from that state, and a copy of the information can be obtained for a nominal fee. You can use the Pension Records for Confederate Soldiers and their widows in the former Confederate state's archives. Most , if not all, SCV Camps have thier own genealogists. They can assist you in tracing your ancestor's Confederate service.
Come visit our camp on the 4th Thursday of each month (except Nov. and Dec.) at:
Piccadilly Cafeteria, 2781 South Cobb Dr. S.E. Smyrna, Georgia 30080-3240.
Dinner at 6:00 pm, and Meeting at 7:00 pm.
Contact senior members Burwell Salmond (770) 971-7952 or Bill Brand (770) 787-9313 if you have any questions.
1. WHAT IS THE SCV? The SCV is an educational, historical, hereditary society of descen-dents of Confederate soldiers, sailors, marines, and government officials.
2. WHO BELONGS TO THE SCV? The SCV is composed of men from every walk of life, from laborers to lawyers. Some of our more well known members include United States Senators Strom Thurmond, Jesse Helms, and Trent Lott. We have many former governors, military officers, and other professional, public people who proudly belong.
3. WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR MEMBERSHIP IN THE SCV? Any male twelve years of age or older, who is a direct or collateral descendent of a Confederate soldier or government official who served honorably during the WBTS may join. These are the only requirements; we do not discriminate based on race, religion, creed, or national origin!
4. WHAT HAPPENS IF AN INDIVIDUAL WANTS TO JOIN, BUT CANNOT PROVE OR DOES NOT HAVE CONFEDERATE ANCESTRY? Most camps within the SCV accept ASSOCIATE MEMBERS. These members are not recognized by our national head-quarters, but may attend and assist in any SCV function. They cannot hold office or vote on official business.
5. WHAT DOES THE SCV DO? Activities vary from camp to camp, but all camps work to educate the general public about all aspects of Confederate and Southern history. Some activ-ities include putting on school programs, living history encampments, maintaining Confederate cemeteries and memorials, assisting other organizations in preserving our nations battlefields, assisting people who are interested in genealogy, and most importantly, answering negative attacks on Confederate heritage.
6. WHAT DOES THE SCV NOT DO? We do not associate with, nor condone hate groups. We do not fly the Confederate Flag for racial reasons. We fly it for historical reasons. Lieutenant General Leonidas Polk Camp #1446, SCV.
