SERENA TSUKINO
The star of the show of
course, and, outside of Peter Parker (a.k.a. The Amazing Spider-Man)
perhaps the most reluctant superhero you'll ever meet. If Serena had
her way, all she'd want from life is to be a normal teenage girl
going through the usual growing pains of adolescence while enjoying
all the fun things her peers do. Instead, she's tasked with the
awesome responsibility of defending the Earth from menaces from
beyond space and time. For a full fledged adult, such a monumental
task would make for a terrible, sanity sapping grind, imagine placing
that burden on the slim shoulders of an irresponsible, accident prone
crybaby who's passions are food, boys, goofing off and video games,
though not necessarily in that order.
As fans of the show and
the manga have seen, Serena's had to grow into her role as the
Champion of Justice through lots of dangerous on the job training
while making more than her fair share of mistakes along the way. It's
been said that the appeal of Sailor Moon has come from the fact that
she's not perfect, she doesn't always know what the right thing to do
is and often succumbs to the fears and insecurities that plague us
all. Yet, when push comes to shove, Serena always manages to come
through and save the day. So we root for Serena because she's one of
us: a regular person, full of flaws like everyone else, and who
struggles daily to do the very best she can, both as a normal person,
and as a superhero. But, like life, it's never easy for her.
I've sought to portray
Serena as being not nearly as goofy as she is in the anime or manga
while retaining all of her wonderful charm. But, don't fret, she's
had a goodly amount of irreverent moments in my work, after all, the
true appeal of Serena lies in her inherent wackiness, though I'll
admit I need to try and bring out just a little more of that in
future stories I do. Writing about Serena has been most rewarding for
me as her personality is like a diamond, possessing many facets.
There is just so much about her, and Sailor Moon that intrigues and
fascinates me no end, and that's what drives me to continue writing
about Serena because there is so much about her I've yet to discover.
And my journey through Serena's world has only just begun.
