ANDREW NICHOLAS MARFLEET
5 December 1999
Well Guy's,
First of all let me start by saying that it is great that Samoa
College
turned out a group of competent technophiles, even from way back
in '84! How
many of us had an inkling that our lives would turn out the ways
that they
have? It's great to hear what everyone is up to, and has been up
to.
For me, as I hope for a lot of us, '84 was the penultimate year
living in
Samoa. I went back a few times, and my Dad is still there to this
day (must
be something about those Samoan women).
Before I start with the arduous task of revealing my post '84
life, I need
to address an important and deeply personal issue... Bill (Mack),
you're a
complete asshole!! Don't worry my friend, Mark and I are plotting
our revenge.
Now that's out of the way, I can continue.
After 1984 I went to Auckland to continue my education, as many
of us did. Went to 7th form at Mt. Albert Grammar (weird time for
me, and don't laugh, but it was a culture shock) Nigel was there
for a while (yes I remember mate) and Gustava and her sister
lived just down the road. Got ok marks, and
the next year, armed with a B Bursary, didn't know what the hell
I wanted to do.
So, to feed my interest in Electronics I went to ATI (Konrad, I
can't remember if we were there at the same time? ) I
subsequently found that I was good at all the papers, except
Electronics, so I quit. Bummed around for
a few months before I took the plunge and on my Dad's advice,
started an apprenticeship in offset printing. That took all of
four years, in which time I was still in touch with Marie,
Gustava, Douglas, Brian etc, and I
don't know if you guys remember, Joseph Baukes. (we flatted
together for a while)
As soon as I became a qualified printer, I quit. Couldn't stand
the job. I then enrolled in a Marketing and Advertising Diploma
at the now named AIT. These days were good to me, I guess you
could say that I started coming out
of my shell. By this I mean I was a lot easier to get on with and
not so serious about life.
During this time I was living in a large caravan on a demolition
site on College Hill (just by Victoria Park, Gustava will
remember it, as will Felicia.
Went on the dole for a few months, still living in the caravan
(which was owned by my friend and I, we were sick of paying
Landlords), then I took the plunge and took a job with a family
run printing company in Auck. City. That
was great, I wasn't actually printing for very long, before I
moved into the desktop publishing and Reprographics side of the
business. So that took three years out of my life, had a great
time, met a girl in Auck. (she was
from Florida) and flew out to meet her in Japan.
From Japan we moved to Athens, and stayed there for about 8
months (something I wouldn't wish on any of you) We both got
tired of the arrogance of the majority of people we encountered,
and the difficulty in
communicating and the pollution. So we decided to move to London
in '93. Blessing in disguise really, the relationship became
strained for one reason or another, she went back to Florida ( I
went to visit a few times, but as a friend, which didn't go down
too well) Anyway, I've settled here for the time being. No great
accomplishments to boast about, apart from being extremely Happy.
I'm intending to come out to Samoa towards the end of 2000
(that's if the world is still alive!) to see my Dad, little
brothers and everyone else.
So that's it in a nutshell, if you want to know more, my memoirs
will be published soon for a modest £19.99 (I wish)
Take care guys, and I will try to rustle up some photos of Mark
and I living it up in London to replace those fakes that have
been posted on the web by someone who will soon regret the day
the thought even crossed their mind.
Until next time, look after yourselves, and only pursue one
interest...happiness.
