How to get the codes on a Pre-1997 Dakota by reading the "check engine" light: Put the key in the ignition and turn the key to the "ON" position three times (Insert key, on, off, on, off, on). On the third turn, leave it in the "ON" position. There will be a short delay as the computer prepares to display the codes. All revealed codes are two digits. The first digit will be flashed, then a pause, then the second digit will be flashed. If there is another code to be revealed, the pause will be longer after the second digit is revealed, before you see the next code begin flashing. For example, if your computer was to reveal the fault codes of 12, 17, and 55, you will see:
FLASH (short delay) FLASH, FLASH
FLASH (short delay) FLASH, FLASH, FLASH, FLASH, FLASH, FLASH, FLASH
FLASH, FLASH, FLASH, FLASH, FLASH (short delay) FLASH, FLASH, FLASH, FLASH, FLASH |
