Assigned Reflection 4Q-2

REFLECTION ON BUILDING BLOCKS by William J. Byron
10 Building Blocks of Catholic Faith

First building block seen at SLUH: The sixth: The Principle of Solidarity
This one is obvious at SLUH because we are “Men for others.” We are brothers to each other and do help each other out. The theme “bleed with me” does not just refer to Jesus, but also to the bond that we share with our fellow students. I believe that this bond is established on direction day freshman year. This bond only grows tighter as we progress through our high school years. The bond enables us to help each other out in whatever way is possible, just like the definition of solidarity. Helping each other out is very important in becoming the person that Jesus wants us too. We need to help those out, whether less fortunate or those in need. We need to be, as the SLUH motto says, “Men for Others” and this is extremely evident in this building block.

Second building block seen at SLUH: The fourth: The Principle of Participation
This is obvious seen at SLUH. We have so many different things going around at SLUH that no one could name them all without looking them up. We have at least forty-one different clubs that are currently active at SLUH. We have over 23 different sports that we participate in (not including all of the JV and C teams) and we have community service that is a huge part of SLUH. Another place this is seen is senior service project. This is seen by not only the SLUH community, but also those that the students are working with. During Senior Service Project, some kids go down to Mexico. This is obviously a part of this principle because it is “seeking together the common good and well-being of all, especially the poor and vulnerable.” (Byron 10)

Missing: The first/ninth building block:The Principle of Human Dignity or The Principle of Human Equality.
This one that is missing because I believe that everyone does not see each others as equals. We might see ourselves as better than another. We do not always respect each other like we should. We need to become better at treating ourselves as equals. We do not always respect one another the way we should. This might be because of race, religion, economic status, intelligence or what they have done in the past. In my eyes, not everyone does this, but I see a lot of people do this. I myself have fallen into the trap of doing this, making fun of someone for who they are or what they’ve done. Everyone needs to work on seeing each others as equals, and then treating them that way.

KEY IDEA #1

The taping that you showed us of Father Ralph Huse is very important. He shows that Ignatius was a very “revolutionary” individual. He was beyond the church for his time. He believed that we can communicate directly to God, no intersession. This is a very key because it changed the way the church thought. Also another good idea that he said was “pride is the ultimate sin and humility is the ultimate virtue.” The devil is out to keep us from what Jesus wants us to do. He wants us to do evil and make the world a worse place. Jesus wants us to be humble and not arrogant and showy. Jesus got mad at the Pharisees and those in authority in the church because they would do everything in a way that everyone could see it. They were “showboating”, showing everyone that they were better than them because of what they can do in their extravagant prayers and donations. Jesus got mad at this because they weren’t being humble; they needed to do this in solitude and not showing off. Pharisees

KEY IDEA #2

The definition for Social Justice is the virtue that requires from each person all that is necessary for the common good. This is goes hand-in-hand with the Ten Building Blocks of Catholic Social Teaching. Social Justice wants the best for the world. The common good is what the ten building blocks are all about. They want the best for the world, just like social justice. All the Blocks are showing that we need to make the world a better place, whether by helping your neighbor, by making the world a better place by preserving and helping keep it the way it is and was. “The family is the first school of social justice.” (Our Moral Life in Christ) The family is the first people you are exposed to and that have influence on you. The family needs to show us as young kids that we need to be respectable young men to our neighbors and the world around us. Social Justice is one thing that is very important to remember and should be a part of your everyday life.

Question:
Is the Examine of Consciousness the most powerful way to reflect on yourself and what you have done throughout the day?

I really do not know if I can answer this because I have not researched enough to say that this is the best way. I do know that this is a very good way to see what your day has been like and if it has been satisfactory or not.
