The Gospel of Luke
Called to take Risks


Vocabulary Shema- a Hebrew word meaning “hear”
anawim- a Hebrew word refering to those who are materially or spiritually poor and are seeking God.
parousia-a Greek word used in the New Testament and other Greek literature which can refer to the official visit of a ruler or to the apperatance of a god.
companion- with bread
shalom- peace

Luke’s Gospel and Audience
-wrote both the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles.
-are the largest contrabution to the Bible by one author
-Acts and Luke were split in two during the second century
-a gentile writing for gentiles
-traces everyting back to Adam thus showing that Jesus is the Savior.
-Old Testament prophices are fullfiled duriing Penatcost “The birth of the Church”
-parousia is the second coming of Jesus at the end of time where God’s plan for salcation willbe accomplished and himanity will be glorified.
-Luke says to be aware of the coming, but don’t expecte it soon, but to concentrate on every day that you live.
-concentrates on Jesus human qualities
-reaches out to outcasts of society.
-shows that the expectations of society are reversed.


Lukes’s use of History and Geography -not a eyewitness to Jesus, but witnessed the saving power of Jesus through the church.
-he tries to make connections between historcal events and events in Jesus life.
-the census ordered Joseph and Mary to Bethlehem.

The Risks of Comitment: Mary as our Model -God choose a simple young and poor woman to be the mother of Jesus.
-Mary’s song of joy and thanksgiving describes her personal experience of God’s power.
-this song is like Hannah’s Song in the Old Testament (1 Sammuel 2:1-10)
-Mary became the link from the past to the present.
-Mary is a symbol that we are called to be God’s servants and to carry Jesus to the world.
-Mary was between the ages of 15-17 when she received the announcement that she was to be the mother of Jesus.
-She modled for us true discipleship when she not only followed the cross of her beloved son but also carried her own cross as well.
-Mary is our mother
-Mary was centered on doing God’s will. She asks us to be centered in the same way. Risking Openness to the Spirit of Unity:The Missino of Jesus
-Luke refers to the Spirit more than do the other writers of the synoptic Gospels.
-He does so by his words and his actions.
-In Luke’s Gospel, table fellowship is an additional way Jesus connects to the anawim of God.
-Sharing food was a sign of acceptance, unity, and closness. To refuse to eat with someone was to treat him or her as an outsider.
-Jesus ignores the laws that governed ritual purity and relationships.
-In Luke’s Gospel ther arenineteen references to table fellowship; thirteen of these examples are found only in Luke.
-The feeding of the Five Thousand is a miricle that reminds us of the Eucharist.
-More than other Gospels, the gospel according to Like emphaizes the importance of prayer.
-It is through prayer that we discover who Jesus is and what a relationship with him can mean to us.
-Since Jesus' disciples awake with him while he prayed, they witnessed the transformation of his appearance and a vision of Moses and Elijah.
-An important theme in Luke's Gospel- the prominent role women play in Jesus' mission.
-Luke may have shown a special intrest in the role of women because he may have been a doctor.
-Luke sometimes parallels a story about a man with a woman.
-Jesus knew that his listners hated the good Samaritan and he still told the story about it.
-This parable criticizes the use of religious excuses to ignore someone in need.
-The person lying by the road might have appeared dead to them and contact with a dead body made a person ritually impure.
-We should be moved to love out of caring and concern for the dignity of another person, even if religioius and cultural customs tell s something different.
