Episode #313

Part Two of Five

Tessa stood by the calesa as Marta tied the horse to the hitching post. They started to walk across the square. Tessa stopped at the fountain and looked towards Doctor Helm's office. "Marta, please wait here while I stop and see Roberto for a moment or two."

"I'll give you five minutes. Then, I am going shopping without you."

Tessa gave Marta an innocent smile. "Te pabaren mage memelia."

"Oh, I will burn candles for you, but I am still going shopping without you."

Tessa tossed her hair to the side with a shake of her head and started for Helm’s office. I had better brush up on my Romany. That wasn’t what I meant to say.

Tessa noticed four injured soldiers on the bench outside of Helm’s office. Señorita Alvarado would not know these men, but the Queen in me sure does. As she neared the door it opened and a soldier stepped out and turned away. He appeared to be in a lot of pain; he wore a bandage around his head and his arm was in a sling. He kept his eyes towards the ground as he headed towards the barracks.

The soldier sitting on the end of the bench closest to the door stood up. Tessa caught up to him and placed her hand lightly on the man’s arm. " Excuse me, Señor, I'll only be a moment."

"Of course, Señorita."

The soldier sat back down. He leaned over to another soldier. "Salvador, she is the only Señorita in this pueblo who would ask, and not tell me, to let her go first." she heard him say.

"Si, Tomas," the other agreed. "A Doña who treats peasants and soldiers as human beings. Not like the other Dons. What is this world coming to?"

Tessa went into the office and closed the door. Doctor Helm was washing his hands in a white porcelain basin, his back to the door. "Remove your shirt. I'll be right with you."

Tessa cleared her throat. He turned around as he was wiping his hands dry with a towel and smiled. "Excuse me. I wasn’t expecting you."

Tessa blushed. He walked over to her, placed his hands along both sides of her face and kissed her. She gently pushed him away. "Not now, Doctor. You still have patients outside."

He chuckled. "So, what brings you into town this morning?"

"I come to town to paint Montoya's office and then, after that, I am going to saddle-break a couple of broncos over at the stables."

"Please, Señorita, I don’t have time for riddles. The Queen seems to have made extra work for me today."

"What do most women come to town for, anyway? Marta and I came to shop. The reason I stopped by was to see if you are free for lunch."

"Why, of course I am. The Cantina at noon?"

"Then, we will see you at noon."

"'We'?" he asked playfully.

"Of course, 'we'. Marta is my chaperone, remember? And Roman and Fenner have gone off on a trip down the coast for a week, so she is staying with me. Besides, a single woman does not meet a man at a cantina alone. It is not proper."

"Of course," he echoed, still smirking at her. She gave him a quick kiss goodbye, opened the door and left.

Helm stood staring at the closed the door and scratched his head. His trance was broken by a knock at the door. "Enter," he called out.

The door opened. Lieutenant Carlos Montoya entered and removed his hat. "Buenos Dias, Doctor."

"Ahh, Carlos, I heard you had returned. What seems to be the problem with you today? " Carlos indicated his foot. "Sit down in the chair by my desk and remove your boot and sock."

Carlos limped over and sat down on the chair and began to remove his boot. "It's nothing, really, Doctor. The only reason I reported for sick call was that Captain Grisham ordered me to."

Doctor Helm pulled a stool closer and sat down. "Let me the judge of that." He applied pressure to the foot, noticing Carlo’s reaction. "It's not broken, just a nasty bruise. Keep it out of a boot for a couple of days and it should feel much better. I will wrap it in a bandage so you can at least walk on it. Wear an abarca until you see me again."

"Will I be able to ride?"

"No, not for at couple of days at least, maybe longer. Tell me, Carlos. How did the Queen injure your foot?"

"I wish it was La Reina who did this. It was my clumsy horse who is responsible for it."

Doctor Helm wrinkled his brow and picked up a clipboard hanging on the side of his desk. He glanced down the list of names. "It says right here, my next patient has a Queen-related injury."

"Rank has its privileges. I don't want to waste all morning waiting here when I should be out searching for La Reina."

Helm started to wrap the foot with the bandage. "You have me a bit confused, Carlos--as if this morning hasn't been confusing enough already. The Queen didn't injure you but yet you are so intent on finding her. Pray tell, why?"

"I guess, since you are my doctor it will be all right to tell you, almost like telling it to a priest, no?"

"Please, Carlos, I am starting to get a headache."

"When my uncle sent me away, transferring me to the garrison in Monterey, I never planned to return. That is, until La Reina met me on the trail and we shared a brief, intimate moment. I knew I had to return to find her, because at that very moment I fell deeply in love with her. Doctor Helm, that bandage is getting rather tight!"

"That should do it for right now." Helm growled, half to himself. Carlos grimaced. Good. It should hurt him. Carlos got up. He placed his boot under his arm and put his hat back on. He turned and limped towards the door.

Helm stayed where he was. "Carlos, please tell the others to come back this afternoon."

"Yes Doctor, I will," Carlos replied in a strained voice. Helm would have laughed if he hadn't been so angry. Carlos would likely need to loosen that bandage as soon as he got back to the barracks. Good riddance.

After Carlos left, Helm walked to the closed door and locked it before sitting down at his desk. He slammed his fist on the desk and propped his elbows on it to hold his head. Reaching down without looking, he removed a bottle of whiskey and a glass from the bottom drawer. He set them on his desk, pulled the cork out of the bottle and filled the glass nearly full. Tessa and Carlos? Is she playing me for a fool? That thought set him drinking in earnest.

Tessa and Marta were fifteen minutes late as they made their way down the wooden sidewalk to the Cantina. Tessa saw Doctor Helm sitting at an outside table in the shade of a canopy. "Sorry we’re late." she said.

Tessa sat down at the table in the chair opposite to him while Marta sat at another table. She saw that his eyes had a glazed look to them, probably attributable to the nearly empty bottle of wine sitting in front of him. She placed an elbow on the table and her hand under her chin. "I see that you're drinking your lunch. Did something happen?"

He stared back, looking belligerent. "You tell me."

"Tell you what? Why are you looking at me like that?"

"Carlos told me all about the intimate encounter the two of you had when you met him on the trail. I guessed you figured that, since he was leaving town for good, I would never find out about it."

Tessa was furious. "I didn't tell you because there wasn't anything to tell. I intercepted him on the trail to see if I could get any information from him about what his uncle was up to. Carlos was broken-hearted about being sent away and I felt very sad for him. I kissed him goodbye, that's all!"

His mouth tightened in an ugly line. "If he hadn't told me, I would never have known because you would have never told me. How many others have you felt very sad for?"

Tessa stood up, knocking down the chair behind her. "There's an old Spanish saying about not trying to argue with a drunk." She walked away. "Come, Marta. We are leaving." Looking puzzled, Marta followed her.

The women walked to the buggy and Tessa got in. Marta climbed up beside her. "Tessa, what is it?"

"Doctor Helm accused me of hiding a relationship with Carlos. Then, he accused me of having a relationship with others. This from the man who I saw kissing another man’s wife? It’s over, Marta. Not another word."

Marta shrugged, but said nothing. For all Tessa knew, Marta agreed with Roberto, but at the moment, she just didn't care. She snapped the reins and drove off.

Act Two

Tessa was depressed. All the next day, she kept to herself. When she returned from her morning ride, she sat in silence at the kitchen table hardly touching her food. After finishing her coffee she spent the rest of the day reading in the rose garden under the shade of a large fir tree.

Marta found her late in the afternoon, sitting by her parents' graves. Even now that I am married, Tessa is more a daughter to me than a friend or mistress, she thought sadly, watching the girl. It saddens me very much to see her like this. She is no longer a child but instead a young woman. It is time that she learned for herself how easy it is for a woman to lose her honor, even over the most innocent of actions. I will not interfere.

That night, Tessa got dressed in the Queen's outfit. "A rumor is going around about a stranger coming to Santa Elena," she told Marta. "He's a guest of Montoya. I need to check into this first hand."

Marta was worried. "I have a bad feeling about this, Tessa."

Tessa waved her off and left. Marta waited for Tessa’s return in the front room, sitting in the easy chair. Three flickering candles sat in a candlestick on the mantle and dimly lit the room. Marta drifted off to sleep. An hour later, a sound woke her. She shook the sleep out of her head. She saw a black form standing in front of her. It was Tessa.

Tessa swayed in place, holding her leg. "Marta, I am bleeding."

Marta became alert. "Madre de Dios!" she cried. She picked up the lantern and shone it on the wound. Tessa was holding her gloved hand over her upper left thigh in a futile attempt to stop the bleeding from the wound. Blood was oozing around her fingers and down her leg. Her pants and boots were covered with blood.

Marta placed her arm over Tessa's shoulder and helped her into the kitchen just as Tessa was about to collapse. She reached up and turned up the wick on the oil lamp hanging down from the ceiling on a chain and then, with her free hand, swept everything off the kitchen table and onto the floor. Marta helped Tessa lie down on top of the table and rolled her onto her right side. "Tessa, have you been shot?" she said.

Tessa grimaced. "No, It was a lancer!"

Marta untied the red sash from around Tessa’s waist, removed the main gauche from her boot and carefully used it to slit her riding pants up the leg. Using both hands Marta tore away the material exposing the bleeding wound. She grabbed a towel and held it over the wound, applying pressure. She took Tessa's hand and placed it on the towel. "Here, hold this tight against the wound."

Tessa was too weak to hold it very tight and the blood began to bleed through. Marta grabbed the sash and used it to tie the folded up towel over the wound and the bleeding slowed. "Tessa don't go to sleep, stay with me!"

Tessa looked weaker as Marta picked up the dagger and went out the back door. She picked up the bellows that was leaning against the wall. The oven was still warm from her baking and she used the bellows to bring life back into the coals. When the coals glowed, Marta put the blade onto the coals. She walked back into the kitchen with the tip and three inches of the blade glowing red. Tessa was not moving and the blade was beginning to cool. Marta pushed back the bandage and placed the hot blade against the puncture wound. Tessa squirmed to life as the pain brought her back around and she gave out a weak moan.

"Nais tuke, Devlese." thought Marta. "Thank you, God." She placed her hand on Tessa's shoulder. "Everything will be alright now." She removed Tessa’s mask and brushed the hair away from her eyes. A weak smile showed on the vigilante’s face and Marta smiled back. But inside, she wept.

Several miles away, a wagon pulled by two horses and driven by a soldier was making its way down a steep trail towards the beach. Two mounted soldiers were following close behind and a lone rider on a white horse was leading the column. Reaching the beach they headed towards a long boat had just landed on the sand. Two sailors were sitting along side of it and stood up when they saw the column approaching. There was no moon and the sky was clear and full of stars.

The supply ship was plainly visible at anchor a few hundred yards off shore. Captain Grisham raised his hand to signal the column to stop when they were about twenty yards away from the boat. He turned to the three behind him. "Stand down. We're going to be here awhile."

Grisham and a Corporal dismounted and walked over to the two sailors. The wagon driver climbed down and stretched his legs while the two soldiers dismounted. One soldier called out. "Where are you going, Pedro?"

"I'll be right back, Juan. I am just going behind the sand dune to relieve myself."

Juan leaned back stretching his sore back. He looked up and swallowed hard. "Pedro, Look quickly!"

Pedro turned back and saw Juan pointing up at the sky. He looked up. "Madre de Dios!"

Grisham watched the two sailors who had launched the longboat as they rowed out to the supply ship. He had started back to his horse when he heard a commotion. He walked past the wagon and driver up the hill. "What are you two idiots doing?" he yelled at the two soldiers.

Juan and Pedro pointed at the sky. "Captain, a huge bird, in the sky!"

Grisham looked up into the sky for a moment and then back at the privates. He turned to the wagon driver. "Did you see anything?" The driver just shrugged his shoulders.

Grisham rolled his eyes. "I think you two have been smoking the local weed again."

"No Captain, we tell the truth." Juan insisted.

"Juan is telling the truth, Captain." Pedro agreed, backing up the first guard.

Grisham turned to see that the longboat was already returning to shore. "You are both on report. I'll deal will you two when we get back to town." He turned away and walked back towards the surf. The two privates started to make hand gestures.

Grisham grinned, catching them out of the corner of his eye. "That's going to cost you!"

Marta pushed Tessa's bedroom door open with her hip and entered with a tray in her hands. On the tray was a steaming hot cup of coffee and two pieces of toast, made from fresh baked bread, with homemade grape preserve on them. She set the tray down on the nightstand next to the bed. She watched Tessa. The young Doña looked like a child, sleeping in her white night gown as she hugged her pillow. Marta had removed her bloodied cloth and helped to bathe her. It was hard to imagine that just a few hours ago, Tessa was so near death. Marta walked across the room and pulled open the long curtains to let the morning sunlight into the room. She unlatched and swung open the window. Fresh ocean air blew in, fluttering the curtains. The sunlight made Tessa turn and stretch as she yawned. Marta sat on the edge of the bed. "Tessa, are you in any pain?"

Tessa opened her eyes, rolled on her back and looked at Marta. "No, I just feel very weak."

"Would you tell me, even if you really were in pain?"

Tessa smelled the aroma and turned to look at the cup of coffee and toast. "Wait, we must do this first," said Marta as she reached into a pocket of her apron and pulled out a small glass jar. "Roll over on your side."

Obediently, Tessa did so and asked, "What is in the jar?"

Marta pulled up Tessa’s nightgown to reveal the wound on her thigh. She removed the lid from the jar she dipped her fingers into a white cream. "This is an ointment that contains aloe. It will help you to heal faster and also lessen the scarring. It should make the wound feel very cool."

"What does it matter? The only ones who will ever see it are you and I."

Marta worked the salve into the wound and waited. It didn't take long. "Marta, I am sorry for the way I have been acting. Roberto really hurt me. I thought he trusted me and then, out of the blue, he accused me of being intimate with Carlos Montoya."

Marta laid a compress over the wound before pulling the nightgown back over Tessa's thigh."Go on Tessa. I am listening." She helped Tessa sit up.

"Marta I told you all about meeting Carlos on the trail, the morning when his uncle sent him away so he wouldn't be around to interfere with Colonel Montoya's plans. I just gave him a kiss goodbye, that's all." Marta did not reply. "Well, maybe also a hug, but nothing more."

Marta stood up and picked up the cup of coffee from the tray and helped hold it for Tessa while she took a sip. "So, how do you explain what happened?"

Tessa shook her head. "Obviously, Carlos must have told him about the encounter. Either Carlos exaggerated about what happened or I am seeing a side of Robert that I really don't like. Besides, Robert and I are just friends. Well, maybe more then friends."

Tessa looked out the window. "I know this will be all straightened out. I will tell you this, Marta, if he does want to pursue our friendship into something more he's going to have to make a choice. He's going to have to choose between me or the bottle."

Marta frowned at this. "Do you have feelings for Carlos?"

"Right now, I just want to knock both of their heads together." Tessa smiled. "Now, if you please, I would love to have a bite of that toast." Tessa took a piece of toast that Marta handed her and took a small bite along with a sip of coffee. Marta watched her closely.

"Fresh baked bread makes such great toast." Tessa said, as if nothing had happened.

"That fresh baked bread saved your life." Marta replied acerbically. She hesitated, then forged on. This needed to be said. "Tessa, you need to resolve this with Dr. Helm as soon as possible." Tessa looked surprised. "I have warned you before about taking your life in your hands as the Queen, but it is not just your life that you risk when you put on that mask, it is your honor. The reputations of other women of your rank have been destroyed over much less than a kiss and a hug. Dr. Helm is now openly wooing you and you have shown public favor to him by enlisted the backing of your own uncle for your courtship. Whether you like it or not, Roberto has certain rights, now. And one of them is knowing that you will not give to other men what you have given to him already." Tessa blushed at this and looked down, confirming Marta's previous suspicions on that score. "If Carlos is spreading such slander about you, you need to find a way to stop him before he ruins you. I think you are very fortunate that he did not tell anyone else or you might have gotten more than your feelings hurt yesterday. As it is, you nearly got yourself killed on your own last night."

Marta was distracted by the sound of a rider on horseback approaching. She walked over to the window and looked out. "It's Doctor Helm." she said, looking at Tessa.

Tessa lay down and pulled the covers over her head. "Send him away. I don't want to see him, not yet."

"Very well," Marta said. "But please remember what I have told you. You must resolve this soon." She left the room.
