Southern California Botanist:
An Anthology

LeRoy Abrams' early work on taxonomy and floristics was focused on southern California. The reason for this is that he was raised in southern California and attended USC after high school and took an early interest in collecting butterflies and plants. He transferred to Stanford University for his Bachelor's Degree and Professor Dudley suggested that he continue his Los Angeles and southern California studies for a Master's Degree. He did this by completing a book called Flora of Los Angeles and Vicinity. He then went to the newly established New York Botanic Garden and and nearby Columbia University, also in New York, where he completed a PhD with his dissertation entitled: The Phytogeographic Distribution of Trees and Shrubs of Southern California. His PhD dissertation was published by the New York Botanic Garden. Original editions of both LeRoy Abrams' Masters thesis and PhD dissertation as books are in the research library of the Ballona Institute. Both LeRoy Abrams' thesis and dissertation are focused on the greater Ballona ecosystem, including its watershed, sand dunes, coastal prairies, not too mention the wetlands (both freshwater and saltwater).
