THE WIZARD OF ROZ

by Bella Richards

“MMM mmm!” Michael squeaked.

“What did I tell you about that?” Maria said threateningly.

MMM mmm!” he insisted.

“What? Oh, fine—here!” she said, handing him the oilcan. “If it’s so important!”

Everyone stood and watched Michael oil his mouth. A dark shadow fell over them just as he loosened his jaw joints and blurted, “Monkeys!”

The evil twin’s army of flying monkeys suddenly attacked them. One of them grabbed Maria and took her up in the air, away from the others. She screamed and squirmed, but he wouldn’t let go. As he carried her off to the wicked witch’s castle, she desperately clicked her heels together, leaving a trail of red glitter for the boys to follow.

Bess was waiting for her. “I told you I’d get you, my pretty!” she cackled as the monkey dropped Maria onto the courtyard flagstones. “Give me those shoes!”

Maria sat up, rubbing her arms. “Make me!” she challenged, standing up to square off against the evil Bess.

They circled each other warily. Suddenly Bess lunged at Maria, grabbing her hair and trying to get her in a headlock. Maria grabbed Bess’s blond curls and scrabbled for a hold.

“Ow!” Bess shrieked.

“Ow!” Maria screamed.

“Let go of my hair!!”

“You let go first!!” Maria demanded.

“Ow!!!” Bess howled.

“Ow!!!” Maria wailed.

“Okay, we both let go on the count of three. One . . . two . . . three!” They stood back to rub their sore scalps, looking at one another appraisingly.

“Paper, rock, scissors?” Maria suggested.

“How about a trade instead?” Bess asked. She picked up her broom and held it out to Maria. “I’ll give you my flying broom for the ruby slippers.”

Maria considered it. “Okay. Deal.” She bent down to take off the shoes.

“On the count of three, then?” Bess said.

“Fine. One . . . two . . . three!” Maria handed over the slippers with one hand and grabbed the broom with the other.

Bess cackled happily. “The ruby slippers! Finally! That bitch sister of mine stole them from me and wouldn’t give them back.” She kicked off the dainty pumps she was wearing and carefully slipped on the shoes she’d just won. She lifted the hem of her long dress to look down at them. “They’re not as sparkly as I remember.”

“The glitter is kind of coming off,” Maria pointed out.

“Damn. Well, they’re comfortable at least,” Bess said, trying to look on the bright side.

“I wouldn’t recommend doing any long-distance walking in them,” Maria advised. “Hey, have you got any other shoes I can borrow? I’d hate to walk all the way back to the Emerald City barefoot.”

“Have I got shoes?” Bess put her arm around Maria’s waist. “I have a whole walk-in wardrobe of them!”

“Did somebody say wardrobe?” Isabel cried happily, her bubble landing on the flagstones.

“Yeah, we said wardrobe,” Maria admitted. “Bess was going to let me borrow a pair of shoes. I traded the ruby slippers for Bess’s broom.”

“But, Maria, you need them to go back home to Kansas,” she pouted.

“New Mexico!” Maria yelled.
