THE LONG WALK INTO HIS ARMS

by Elizabeth

He smiles at her and she knows he is remembering the argument she had with the sleepy and bored airline representative at the Albuquerque airport last night. When she'd found out that their bags had managed to leave Oregon on a much earlier flight (to Dallas, no less--a city Maria finds infinitely more interesting that Albuquerque) she wasn't happy.

It wasn't the loss of her clothes that bothered her; it was missing the security of having her things and Michael's things with her. She needed reminders of their life together when they came back to New Mexico.  It helped her remember that she wasn't eighteen anymore, that Michael wasn't still running from her and himself and everything else, that he'd chosen her. That he loved her.

But the airline clerk wouldn't care and she certainly wouldn't have told him anything like that anyway and Michael was anxious to get to the hotel, so Maria had finally given up in frustration. She'd asked the clerk if he could just have their bags shipped back home and he'd shrugged and said "Sure. When are you going back?"

She'd looked over at Michael for a second and the moment it took for him to respond unfurled and made her stomach clench in fear. "A couple of days," he finally said and she let out the breath she was ashamed to be holding and yet held anyway.

And now Michael finally walks away from the window and comes over to her. "Please," he says and that word defeats her as it always does. She can't deny him this. She goes and takes a shower and they leave the hotel thirty minutes later.
