ALL THIS AND HEAVEN TOO

by Joy Elizabeth Watson

I just want to feel safe in my own skin
I
just want to be happy again
I
just want to feel deep in my own world
But I'm so lonely I don't even want to be with myself anymore.
--Dido, "Honestly, OK"

"What is Earth like?"

I raised my head quickly at that question.  He was staring at me intensely.  I wondered if it was something that he'd been thinking about for a long time.

"Why do you want to know?" I asked.

He shrugged. That was strange to me.  Not then, in that moment, but when we first arrived. They use the same body language as we do. They shrug, they nod, they shake hands.

"Earth is like . . ."  I paused, trying to find the words to describe it.  "Earth is full of color.  Everywhere you look, there’s color. There’s green in the trees and in the grass.  Bright green.  And the flowers are so alive."

He nodded.

"Alive," I repeated. "That's what Earth is.  Everything there is alive."

There was a wistfulness in my voice.  I heard it and he heard it, too.

"Do you miss it?" he asked.

"Yes," I answered truthfully.  I looked down at the ground. "That probably sounds strange to you."

"No," he replied. "It was your home."

I smiled at that.  It was my home.  For so many years, I thought my home was a star far away from Earth.  A planet that I couldn't find.  But now that I'd found it, and now that I'd returned, home was the place that I'd been all along.
