Few Mother Plants for rose breeding in Bangladesh

To start breeding selection of mother plant is very important. Because very few rose show male sterility (I think ‘Charisma’ one of them) but most modem rose variety do not produce seed or produce few seed that it become difficult to breed with these varieties.

Modern roses are gown in Bangladesh from 1960 or before but it began to spread widely all over the country from 1980. From then at least 1200 varieties are introduced here. But most of them fail to perform their pick performance here—mostly due to high temperature and heavy rainfall (high humidity and water lodging). Now about 450-500 rose verities are found in Bangladesh. I have cultivated most of the available rose varieties in my garden. Of them I have found some varieties, which are very suitable mother plant for the beginner. I have mentioned some of them below.

  HYBRID TEA :
  BLESSINGS: 12+

A good mother plant for the beginner because it easily produces seed. It’s hip needs longer time to ripe. A fine bedding variety, it produces most of its flower at a time.

It is not so lively rose as mentioned in other countries catalogue—flower open too quickly and dieback is a problem.

  CHRISTIAN DIOR: 20+

Best red variety available in our country, especially for exhibition and garden. It is susceptible to meldew, but luckily—here we do not have meldew problem in rose. So this variety thrives well. It is one of the few varieties which performing constantly and adapted very well in our country. So it can contribute to raise our climate adjustable rose.

This variety could be more accurate if it would have fragrant and more foliage. So we can try to put those things from pollen parent to this variety.

  FIRST PRIZE: 12/14+

It produces seed very easily that any beginner will succeed by using it as a mother plant. It has large, exhibition quality bloom with classical shape.Main drawback is die-back— so this bush often suffer from lack of balance.

Another drawback is— its seedlings often show a dull shade of color. Another variety Montezuma’s seedlings also show same problem.

To overcome these problems is better to use pollen parent with very light or deep color shade with it.

  GODFREY WINN: 15 (average)
Most fragrant rose available in our country, it is more fragrant than ‘Double Delight’. To breed fragrant and lilac-mauve color rose. It would play an important role. Major problem is die-back.

  LAURA:      8/10+
An important mother plant for it’s bright color. But its main drawback is susceptibility to die-back. This variety has another good character— it regularly throws new shot from base.

  PRISTINE: 13/14 (average)

It has many good characters. It is vigorous; foliage dark green, large and attractive; hardy; it drops its petals cleanly after finishing flower; disease resistance.

It has not much petal like its pollen parent—just enough to make a shapely flower. It can contribute all of its good characters to its seedling.

  PRINCESSE: 15+

Best rose for the exhibition in orange-scarlet group in our country. Very few flowers can challenge its superiority in color and size. It has good-looking large foliage, which often occur in its seedling too. But it is a moderate grower and produces very few exhibition quality flowers in winter only. Rest of the year it produce small irregular formed flower. It would be a tremendous thing if can combine vigorousness and weather resistance with it. Lets try!

  TAJMAHAL : 6/7+
It is one of the top performers in our country and very suitable for our climate. So we can use this character to breed Bangladeshi type rose. Its seed coat is very thick—means has difficulty in germination. It is advisable to start breeding with this variety early in the season.

  VIA MALA: 20+
This variety is known as Virgo in our country. Very vigorous and one of the few varieties available in our country, which need lees spray and it overcomes die-back problem easily. It has two backward (1) it has tendency to produce very long hoot (2) it flower neck is often become curved.

It is an important mother plant like Tajmahal that can contribute to produce our climate adaptable rose

.

  FLORIBUNDA:

  BERYL WEARMOUTH: l5+
Fine garden-variety but it is not suitable variety for Rose Show because its irregular shaped cluster. Worth mentioning characters of this variety is—its seeds easily germinate and germination rate are very high. Its healthy bush is little taller than average and has good diseases resistance.

  BON BON: 15 (average)
It’s flower, foliage, cluster all are large—specially the foliage. A lovely rose. Its main problem is dieback. Because of that this rose bush often show lack of balance. It is a suitable mother plant for the beginner. Its main asset is its foliage and most of its seedlings show same character. You have to remember another thing when you are breeding with this variety, that most of the seedling show red-crimson type color and show fewer petals.

  FUSILIER AND ITS SPORTS: 5+
  In the very beginning of my rose growing when I first attended rose show, I saw one orange-scarlet floribunda dominating and brightening the whole rose show. I asked the name of variety- they called it ‘Fuselia Red’. Another flower bearing same characteristic except color they called it ‘Fuselia Pink’. Because it’s flower is pale pink. But I never found such name in any rose book. Recently we brought flower from India named ‘Rare Edition’. In all aspect (except color) it is same as the above-mentioned two varieties. Then it became clear that these varieties are actually a series of sports and they came from one to next which are as follows;

Fusilier (Morey, J & P 1957) oragne-scarlet [known as ‘Fuselia Red’] sport —→ Kusum (V.5. Padhye 1978) pale pink [known as ‘Fuselia Pink’] sport—→ Rare Edition (Kasturi Rangan, 1982) scarlet with white splashes & stripe.

Any way those variety are very vigorous, bearing flower in big trusses and has large lovely foliage and compact bushy growth. They frequently produce new shoot from base. These variety has two problems— they are susceptible to black spot & often attacked by red spider mite. My two fine variety ‘Hementha’ and ‘Ananda’ came from these seed parent.

  QUEEN ELIZABETH: 15 (average)
Nothing need to say about this world famous variety. But it is not so popular in our country like other country— reason perhaps it’s flower open quickly. But its lively dark green large foliage and healthy bush always an attraction. It also has very good disease resistance. An important mother plant to breed healthy and diseases resistance rose.

I have used very little  Miniature and Polyantha as seed parent because these varieties are difficult to handle. Specially (when you hybridize in open out door) after emasculation— when you are putting a ploythen bag or cloth— you must be careful. Because at that time little stress on flower neck will not produce seed. Anyway if you are interested to use Miniature and Polyantha as mother plant you can try these varieties because they naturally produce seed.
  MINIATURE:

Rise N’ Shine

Rainbows End

  POLYANTHA:

                                                 Chatilon Rose
Priti (known as ‘Dick Koster’ in our country)
                                                 Baharani

  ABBREVIATION:
  (1)   10+ or 15+        Means produce more than ten or fifteen seeds per hip
