Background information on NWP:

New World Telecom The company has installed approximately 7,000 payphones on public streets and in privately-owned sites such as airports, hospitals and major shopping centres. In excess of 13,000 New World payphones are planned to be operational in the UK by the year 2000.

The Private Equity Division of Mercury Asset Management led the £56 million secondary buyout of New World Payphones (NWP). NWP was acquired from Phildrew Ventures, whose 1994 buyout of the company valued it at £11.6 million. The company, which is the UK's leading independent operator of payphones on private sites and last year began to establish a presence in the public street phone-box market, made profits of around £900,000 on sales of £12.3 million in 1996/7. NWP, which was established seven years ago, is now moving into the prepaid phonecard market, a sector which is still relatively underdeveloped in the UK, and is also eyeing the Continental European and electronic banking markets. Funding to support future growth was included in the £68.5 million package structured by Mercury. Mercury itself invested £12 million form client funds for a 37% stake in NWP, bringing in Chase European Equity Associates, which invested £8.6 million, and Robert Stephen Holdings, which rolled over an £8 million stake. Bank of Scotland arranged a debt package which included £7 million of mezzanine and £16 million of acquisition debt, as well as working capital and revolving credit facilities.

-New BT phonecards:

Firstly, two new items from BT. The first is a new general set offering buyers the opportunity to win cash via a scratchoff. The cards are running under the banner of 'Win lots of smackers' and feature a set of lips that have 'kissed' the card. Four values are available, 3, 5, 10 & 20 Ukps, with each card determining the size of the prize you get.

The other new card that I have seen is of the 1999 Edinburgh Festival. It is a 3ukp card that shows a night time pic of Edinburgh castle, which is lit up both by it's own lights and some fireworks. The reverse shows two ballerinas dancing. It is one of the nicest BT cards

ever:-) "Thousands of Smackers to be won ..." chip GPT3, values 3, 5, 10, 20 pounds. showing a red lipstic mark on various background colour.
