Red Red Wine
By UB40
UB40's first # 1 was "Red Red Wine" in 1983.
Originally written by Neil Diamond.
It was also a big hit in 1969 for Tony Tribe.
After UB40 performed "Red Red Wine"
at the 1988 Nelson Mandela Concert at Wembley, the renewed promotion
in the USA resulted in the single
reaching the number 1 spot.
The multi-racial band was
named after the form issued
to unemployed people in
the UK to receive benefits.
UB40 are the most long-lasting proponents of crossover
reggae in the UK.
In the UK,
UB40 have done as much to popularize reggae as Bob Marley
did for the rest
of the world.
