ASSIGNMENT 2: COMMUNITY & INTERACTION

Goal: The purpose of this assignment is for you to experience being part of an online community, interacting with other educators for the purpose of professional development. NOTE: This can also be a model for online communication with or among your students.

Directions: Pick one of the Electronic Discussion Lists described on pages 506-508 in the Egbert book, and join the online community. Participate in this community for at least 4 hours, and write a summary of your experience.

• Which online community did you join?
• What types of interactions occured?
• Did you lurk, post, or both? If you posted, what was the experience writing to an authentic audience?
• What did you learn from joining this community?
• What did you share with this community?
• What do you like about this community?
• What are its limitations?

Due 02/14/01, 5:00 p.m.:

1. Post summary of your online community experience
   
   
2. Skim your peers' postings
   
   
3. Reply to (at least) one of your peers' postings (e.g. ask for clarification of a point, agree/disagree, etc.)
