Holden Caulfield was a person of little faith, not trusting most people and thinking negatively of others. Holden Caulfield was not able to rely on others around him because he had such little faith in them. Holden had faith only in his sister Phoebe, whom which he could rely on to help him in his times of need.
Holden Caulfield could not trust most people, including his roommate Stradlater. Stradlater was very popular with the ladies, and Holden felt that he could not leave women that he liked alone with Stradlater because of this. Holden’s little faith in others also caused him to think negatively of others, as if they were his enemies. Every character that Holden would encounter in the book, besides Phoebe, would be described in a negative way by Holden.
Holden not only had little faith in those around him, but he also had little faith in himself causing him to have a low self-esteem and to care to the level that he should about his schoolwork and other very important aspects of his life. Those who have low faith in themselves have a very tough time succeeding in life because there is little or no drive to make them push themselves to become better.
Phoebe was the one person that Holden Caulfield had faith in, and she was there at his times of need to help bring him back to happiness. In the end of the book, Holden tells her that he is leaving. Phoebe puts herself in a position where Holden would either have to take Phoebe with him, or he would have to stay. Because of her persistence and love for him, Holden decided not to leave, and was overcome with happiness. Phoebe’s capability to help Holden at this point in the book has increased Holden’s faith in Phoebe and others around him.
