Asha for Education is “an action group for basic education in India.” Several students back in 1991 thought that they needed to improve the lives of the people of India, which is the country all of the students originated from. They all agreed on the fact that if Indian children had a chance to be more highly educated, the society and economy of a struggling India would greatly improve. The group chose the name Asha because it is the Indian word for hope. They believe that Asha will give India and its children a sense of great hope for the future. In the world today there are over 66 chapters and 45 of those are in the U.S.A. People who are part of these chapters seek out education projects to work with in India and provide support through funds and other means. While thousands of childrens’ lives have been changed by Asha, there a millions more children that need help which is why Asha keeps striving. The people of Asha are dedicated and willing to strive for change. They put in many hours and most of them don’t live in India, have family in India, or have any real reason to help out in this project other than because they have faith in the world and its people. They have faith that because of their efforts, the world can grow into a better place, not necessarily just becoming more economically and socially stable. The people of Asha put in a lot of work and I admire them for what they do and continue to do.
