Look at the Candy Cane
What do you see?
Stripes that are red
Like the blood shed for me

White is for my Savior
Who's sinless and pure!
"J" is for Jesus My Lord, that's for sure!

Turn it around
And a staff you will see
Jesus my shepherd
Was born for Me!

The Legend Of The Candy Cane

A humble candy maker in Indiana wanted to make a candy that would symbolize the true meaning of Christmas, Jesus, so he made the Candy Cane.  He incorporated several symbols for the birth, ministry and death of Jesus Christ.

He began with a stick of pure white candy to symbolize the Virgin Birth and the sinless nature of Jesus, and hard to symbolize the Solid Rock, the foundation of the church, and firmness of the promises of God.
He formed it in the shape of  the letter "J" to represent the precious name of Jesus, who came to earth as our Savior.  If turned upside down it represents the staff which Christ, the Good Shepherd , uses to guide and rescue his fallen lambs who have gone astray.  The narrow stripes  represent the scourging that Christ suffered on his way to the cross.  The large red stripe is to remind us of the blood that Jesus shed to save us from our sins.  Sometimes a green stripe is added as a reminder that Jesus is a gift from God.

The flavor of the cane is peppermint, which is similar to hyssop. Hyssop is in the mint family and was used in the Old Testament for purification and sacrifice. Jesus is the pure Lamb of God, come to be a sacrifice for the sins of the world.

So the next time you see a candy cane take a minute to remember the real meaning of Christmas.
