                                      The Constellations

During these assignments, unless given permission by the teachers to visit other websites, ONLY THE
WEBSITES LISTED BELOW WILL BE USED!  Failure to follow library rules of correct computer/internet
use will result in losing the privilege of using the computers.  Turn in your worksheets to the teacher after each
day of astronomy internet library work.

Read the information at the top of the “Constellations web page” before scrolling down to and clicking on  The
Constellations Table in the middle of the page.

You will see a list of the 88 constellations.  Click on the constellation ORION and answer the questions.

1. The earliest stories of Orion as a person in history was told by the Hittites, a European/Middle Eastern group of

2. There are many cultural variations about the mythic tale of Orion, but to the Greeks, Orion was known as the
“Dweller of the __________” and was famous for his prowess both as a __________ and as a lover.

3. The ancient Greek stories also say that it was the Earth Goddess who sent another animal to kill Orion.  This
animal is located at the opposite side in the sky from Orion and is one of the 12 Zodiac constellations known as the

You will see a diagram of the constellation Orion which is similar to the project you have done or will do in plotting the
stars that
make up the constellation Orion on a map.  You are to plot the stars on the graph below and place their Greek letter
name next to
them.  There are 31 yellow dots on the map which represent the stars in the constellation Orion.  One extra star known as
Aldebaran
(alpha Taurus), the Bull’s eye in the constellation Taurus is included on the map. The 3 gray dots represent other nebula
(huge
cloud-like objects) or galaxies.  Plot them also.
 
 

Go back to the Constellations table and click on the constellaton URSA MAJOR.
5. Ursa Major means “The Great Bear” and is the home of another more famous and better known  constellation we
know as the

6. The brightest star in the Big Dipper is alpha Ursae Majoris, named Dubhe.  The star is a binary star system which
means there are
two stars together as a pair instead of one star.  The “Companion” of Dubhe orbits around the star Dubhe every

7. Which direction does the companion star orbit?  Clockwise or counterclockwise? __________________

8. Alpha Ursa Major (Dubhe) is the dot in the middle with it’s companion star orbiting around it, sometimes close to it
sometimes far
from it.  About what year will the companion star be the closest to Dubhe? _____________.

9. Scroll back to the top of the page and click on the highlighted word URSA MAJOR. You will see a diagram of the
constellation
Ursa Major.  Plot in the 17 yellow dots which are the stars that make up the Big Bear and connect the dots.
 
 

10 & 11.  Go back to the Constellations table and choose two other constellations of your choice.  Put in the stars of
each
constellation on the two map grids below.  Lable the Right Ascension/Declination marks on each grid.  Lable each star
with its Greek
letter designation and proper name if there is one.  Connect the dots.  Lable your constellations for each grid.
