// The Flowers of Evil
Prologue

Lyre tied the thick, rough rope with a knot once more, and stopped to take a last look at Sagittarius saint’s beautiful tanned face. He was smiling pleasantly, as if death was no cruel thing to him. She, who had always hunted in vain for eternal rest, thought that for a moment she was able to understand that non-materialist feeling of his, that will to live unattached from life itself. But she failed; for whatever Lyre felt was for far from a strong desire to die – though she wouldn’t see it –, nor did the expression stamped on Aeolos’ face meant happiness. His heart was as broken as hers, for having forsaken both his wife and brother, all alone then; nevertheless, he felt relieved, down in his soul, because he knew Athena’s destiny was in good hands and in some years she would grow up and reclaim her position as the Sanctuary’s ruler.
One of Lyre’s tears rolled down his face and fell over the petals of a rose lying beside Aeolos.
"How come... how come a flower for love be the same for death?" she whispered, placing the rose on Aeolos’ chest. "How come a mouth that used to sing joy must be shut by such a profound silence? No, Aeolos, the world’s all wrong. The fair can’t die like this." there was unbelievable pain and grief in her as she leaned to give him her last kiss, to say goodbye with an useless caress. She then covered his dearest face using part of the sheet, tied it well enough to hide the smallest bits of his body and finally held him and cried of the dead flesh for many minutes. Still she had no courage to go bury him.
"I buried my mother, my sister, my mistress and my husband, but I never thought I would suffer so much by doing it again..." she muttered while sobbing. "Goodbye, my sweet Aeolos. Give my best regards to Hades, and please ask him not to forget about me."

"The only thing I don’t get is..." Seiya started over, after a short break on that little explanatory discussion. "Why should exactly Aeolos, the most important saint of all, haven’t come back to life."
Everybody exchanged glances among themselves, quite admired not only at the relevant question raised by Seiya but at the fact it was Seiya indeed to raise it. No one had any ideas to answer the pertinent, unusual question.
"Well... I can’t answer that." Saori said. "All the times I’ve burned my cosmo as a goddess to bring a saint back to life, no matter whether it took me almost all my energy, no further complications aroused in that. But... yes, I’ve looked for Aeolos’ spirit many times and I can’t say if it’s due to the fact we don’t know where his body is, but the point is... I’ve never been able to find him. I haven’t even caught a glimpse... I’d only feel him sometimes, whenever Seiya received the Sagittarius cloth and when I got close to falling on the Abyss of Souls. Anyway, it was all so quick that I had no reaction. Perhaps... Perhaps Aeolos doesn’t want to resuscitate."
"How come?" Seiya complained, stared at Saori’s words. "What kind of saint wouldn’t want to live again?!"
"Probably the kind of saint who knows his mission has been accomplished and there’s nothing else for him to do." Shiryu completed his sentence, sensible usually.
"Or the kind of saints who just can’t come back." Hyoga added, enigmatically.
The saints turned to him, confused.
"You know, there are many forces acting in the universe aside from Wisdom. And Athena’s holds no control over the Land of the Dead."

NOTE: Just a little note here: although I, Lyre, am writing this fic, I must give the proper credits to SMC Vane: the idea was *all* hers. Of course it was my job to write, describe and make up all the scenes, but the idea for the plot was hers one and only. Therefore we may say that, in the end, she's the co-authoress (in fact, I'll probably be pissing her off asking for her opinion, suggestions, tips and so on, as I usually do). Thank you!
