Fragrance in your home can be wonderful. Use fragrance to liven up your home. Great aromas can create the right atmosphere, calm you, and make a place feel more like home. Here are some natural ways to add fragrance to your home.

Please read this first.

  • For fragrant interiors: place aromatic herbs in kitchens (rosemary, basil, sage, dill). Dry the herbs hanging upside down, tied with a pretty ribbon.

  • You can also dry herbs in or over a fire for a lovely smell. Fresh sage gives off a great aroma when burnt.

  • Use scented candles of various colors on windows, on the mantel, near stairs, on a table, or in a candlabra. You can decorate them yourself with colored wax paper.

  • Scent rooms with pots of snowdrops, crocuses, hyacinth, paper whites, freesia, lavender. Let them grow!

  • Use fragrant pine branches for holidays.

  • Place potpourri in bowls on radiator to spread the aroma.

  • Tie potpourri in a handkerchief and tuck in drawers and linen closets or put in pretty bags to hang on doorknobs.

  • Place potpourri in the bathroom so the steam will bring out the scent.

  • Spray stationery with fragrance mist lightly.

  • Use scented soaps - or scent with natural oils.

  • When roses fade, wrap petals in muslin for a scented dresser drawer.

  • Most useful herbs: hyssop, rosemary, sage, salad burnet, thyme, winter savory

  • Kitchen windowsill herbs: chervil, chives, parsley, winter savory

  • Greenhouse herbs: french tarragon, lemon verbena, licorice, mint, scented pelargonium. These may also grow in your garden outside.

  • Peppermint smells great and picks up the area or you! Grow the mint or just use mint essence, dilute and spray.

  • Lemon and citrus smells are bright and wonderful. Place bowls of bright citrus in rooms or from a hanging basket.

  • Decorate: push cloves into lemons or oranges and arrange in a bowl.

  • Use essences - scented oils of sandalwood, rose, etc. and heat them to spread lovely warm aromas.

  • Fill a clear glass vase with dried herbs or potpourri.

  • A bowl of fresh roses or other fragrant flowers is lovely. Or hang the flowers to dry upside down from a curtain rod.
