Mazzy pt I

Dawn was in her bedroom when she heard it, a shuffling sound. No! a scraping, right outside the house as if someone was trying to pick the lock, and the sound of a voice.
"Slayer! I've come forth to settle a debt." Dawn ran from her room to her Mom's old room. It overlooked the front and she could peer out the window to see a handsome young man with dark hair and clothes that look like he just stepped out of a Mad Max movie standing outside. Suddenly like a hunter sensing prey, the man looked up and saw her. Dawn gasped and jumped back.

He leapt up, and grabbed the edge of the sill, stooping on it. His fiery eyes surveyed her slim body as she backed against the door. It shook with a pounding fist. She screamed and jumped forward, away from it again. The man jumped down and grabbed her before she fell to the floor. She gasped and pushed him away, but her hands jammed into the sharp objects he carried so proudly on himself. Shouting with pain, she yanked her hands towards her and looked at her palms. Large gashes were gouged all along them, and blood was nearly spurting out, running down her wrists and between her fingers. She looked up into his face again. He cocked his head to the side, and slowly took her tiny hands in his.
"I will bind them," he muttered to her, reassuring her in gruff way. Dawn's long arching eyebrows shot up in surprise.
"Oh. thank you...?" she squinted her blue eyes.."What's your name?" He paused and led her to the bathroom.
" Some call me Steven some call me...well. Connor."

The man reached into a leather pouch at his waist and pulled out a makeshift bandage. Then he reached for Dawn's hands. She hesitatingly moved them to him, unsure if she should trust this stranger. He's piercing blue eyes looked into hers. When she looked at them she felt something familiar, like she knew him. But that was crazy.
"Who are you?" He didn't answer just took her hands and began to wrap them up. He looked up at her.
"You should be afraid of me, yet you trust me. You are a brave girl". Dawn pulled away her hands and backed away.
"I don't trust you. I don't even know you or why you're here." In the hall, she found a marble statue from her Mom's gallery, picked it up and held it defensively. "What do you want!" she asked threateningly.

He inched towards her slowly...like a cat. But his moves were not threatening, just cautious. He didn't want her to bolt, but he didn't want her to strike either. If she tried to strike he would have to get violent. She raised the statue over her head, but it began to slip out of her bloody fingers. Just before it slipped and fell onto her skull, he jumped suddenly on his lightning reflexes and grabbed it, throwing it onto the bed like a dirty dead thing. She looked at him, amazement painting her face. He looked from the statue to her.
"I am not going to hurt you." He gently pulled her hands towards him again to work on binding them. She watched his smooth face, his dark brows as he concentrated on her wounds. Something about him was familiar. She couldn't quite place it.
"But who are you?" she meekly asked again. He glanced up at her, his eyes shifted around the room then, as if he was watching for an enemy. Everything was silent except for the rustle of something in the bushes below the window on the ground.
"Many things. I should not tell you." He whispered. She looked down at his strong hands cleaning and covering her bleeding scratches so gently. He seemed so vicious, but so careful and kind. She allowed her pink glossy lips to smile. Suddenly the door crashed open, and Buffy came striding powerfully in. She slammed the door shut behind her, and leaned against it breathing heavily.
"Dawn, are you okay?" she asked forcefully, moving towards her tiny sister. Dawn nodded, and then swallowed hard as Buffy turned towards Connor. Their eyes met. Buffy faltered. "Oh my god..." she whispered, her beautiful hand flying to her mouth "You feel like Angel...I know you...your...Connor. Oh my god." Dawn looked at her stricken sister, and back at the handsome fighter standing in front of her, looking intensely back and forth...

"Slayer," Connor dropped Dawn's hand and took a step toward Buffy.  Dawn instinctively grabbed his arm in an attempt to protect her sister.  Buffy stood in shock inspecting this young man.  He had Angel's presence and that calmed her, but there was something else about his eyes and the predatory way in which he moved toward her that she recognized as dangerous.  "Dawn, step away from him".  Her sister protested,
"No, Buffy, it's OK.  He's not here to hurt us."  Connor turned his face to Dawn again and gave her a sly smile which she returned.  Buffy unsure about the situation took a defensive stance.
"Connor, why are you here?"  He answered immediately
"You know why Slayer--to settle a debt, a debt that is owed because of the man who calls himself my father."  It was strange to hear the man she had once loved talked about in that way.
"Angel," she whispered, remembering in an instant all the pain, passion and longing that came along with the conjuring of his name.  Angel a father and Darla, dangerous, evil Darla as a mother.  Dawn stood by and witnessed as Buffy placed her arms calmly to her side as she prepared to explain the way things were to Connor.  "Your father, Angel, is not a part of my world anymore.  Things between us are over and there is no business between us.  Why don't we sit down and talk about this more calmly."   She peered beyond the handsome stranger to gaze on her sister.  "Dawn, why don't you go in the kitchen and put on some water for tea.  Connor and I have a lot to talk about."  Dawn shook her had and gave Connor a reassuring pat.  "It's OK."  He trusted her implicitly.  He didn't know why, but there was something so sweet and kind in her eyes.  Something that made him want to cradle her and protect her and keep her safe.  He eased his own attacking stance and looked back at the Slayer.  "I agree to your terms.  I want to hear your explanation on why that evil thing 'Angel" doesn't deserve payback for his sins."
