Good-bye Major 803's Christmas Mess Dinner was a success. As usual, we ate well as we had too much food and drink. Entrance fee to this activity consisted of a donation of a non-perishable food item per cadet, which was later donated to a local charity. Special thanks to LAC M Reede for his assistance in getting things organized for the delivery of the 4 boxes of food collected. Dinner was followed by a teary goodbye to and from Major Durocher. Claude's 65th birthday requires him to hang up his uniform permanently. He has served as 803's Commanding Officer for 2 non-consective 5-year terms. He is a beloved and cherished member of 803, being the heart and soul of our squadron. Thankfully , he remains as a valued member of the Civilian Committee. WO1 Bisson commemorated his departure with a haunting rendition of "Auld Lang Syne". Dinner was followed by a Gift Exchange with former cadet Nick Sevastos playing the role of Santa Claus. The cadets only spoke of going home well after 11PM, as they danced up a storm to all the latest hits. Good work to Cpl J Marchand for organizing the dance and the decorations. Maybe next year, the Christmas tree will be feeling better. Basketball Tournament Congratulations to 803's basketball team for winning the tournament held at 867 Ile Perrot. It was a neck-in-neck race to the end, but 803 pulled ahead towards the last minutes of the game. |
Promotions It was CO's Parade on Tuesday December 8, 1998, and cadets, as well as one of our officers are moving up the ranks. O/Cdt Stirzaker was promoted to the rank of full Lieutenant, receiving credit for her time served as an officer in her native England. Lt. Stirzaker has been with 803 for 2-1/2 years, and she will fall under one of 803's traditions. As a commissioned officer, Lt. Stirzaker will have to dish up a silver dollar to the first five people who salute her. Two cadets can now call themselves LAC (acronym for Leading Air Cadet): Tim Petersen and David Cabelera. Also, making the promotion list were four Sergeants, promoted to the rank of Flight Sergeant: E, Bartleman, J. Mastrioanni, K. Lesniak and S. Pierre-Etienne. These promotions free up some room at the Sergeant levels, and more promtions are in the works in the very near future. Parade Positions With a larger number of recruits this year, the number of flights have changed from three to four. The cadets are divided into a smaller groups and are led by higher ranking cadets, called NCO's. Each "flight" is led by a Flight Commander and assisted by a Flight Deputy Commander. A complete list of NCO's (acronym for non-commissioned officers) and their Parade Positions can be found on the NCO page. |
Children's Wish Foundation This holiday season, the cadets of 803 will be volunteering their time to help raise funds for a very good cause. The "Children's Wish Foundation" helps sick dying children with their wishes; wishes that they may never grow up to have. Addendum: Dec 29, 1998: Honourable mentions extended to LAC J. Gordon for spending 34 hours during the week just before Christmas volunteering his services, and to Cpl S. Matteo for dedicating 25 hours of her time. A total of 20 cadets were present for this activity. Thanks to all these cadets for their generosity of spirit. In no particular order they are: Cpl C Paquette, Cpl K deCastro, A Chikani, S Sassoon, Cpl S. Furtado, F/Sgt D Birdi, LAC F Gordon, Cpl B Chu, F/Sgt G Csizmar, S Walter, J Bardosh, G Shahban, F/Sgt K Lesniak, E Pellicone, F/Sgt S Pierre-Etienne, WO2 H Farag, Cpl J Marchand, and Cpl M Pelletier. Special thanks to Lt K Savage and Sgt A Leduc for their moral support. Canadian Tire Fund-Raiser One of the three major fund-raisers for 803, the Canadian Tire Activity, not only gives the squadron much-needed finances, but also serves as a public awareness activity for the community. 46 cadets participated in this weekends activity. They help the cashiers during this hectic season by "bagging" the purchased items by the customers. They also help with odd jobs around the store, most especially cleaning up and restocking the Christmas department. |
Promotions After much anticipation, the first set of promotions were handed out. The lucky recipients from LAC (Leading Air Cadet) to Corporal were: B. Chu, A. Dolezalek, F. Arnold, S. Furtado, C. Paquette, M. Horobec. Now holding the rank of Sergeant are the following Corporals: O. Jones, J. Corbie, F. Erbiceanu. Congratulations. For the rest of the cadets, stay tuned, because more promotions are in the works. |
Award Sgt A. Leduc was presented a plaque from the "Dodo Bird Club of ex-RCAF Flight Sergeants" in honour of WO2 Charles H. LeBarge, CD for being the TOP cadet in his camp. During the summer of 1998, Sgt Leduc attended a 6-week technical training camp, specializing in Photography. He is currently the official squadron photographer, and he will be involved in teaching his acquired knowledge to the cadets of 803. As an added bonus, Sgt. Leduc received a cheque for $100 from the National Air Cadet League. Camp applications for the 6-week photography course are currently under way. Criteria for these camps can be obtained from squadron personnel. |
Bowl-A-Thon 42 cadets participated in the Annual Bowl-A-Thon held Saturday November 24th, 1998 at Laurentian Lanes. The one to beat was Major Durocher, who has been an avid bowler for many years. There were 4 cadets per lane, each playing 3 games. Each cadet collected funds to help pay for our first major activity: Rawdon, Winter Leadership Weekend (to be held the last weekend in November). Cadets are awarded prizes for their efforts. The top male and the top female scorers (per any one game) will receive a Bowling Trophy, at the end of the year. Scores were collected from the computer print-outs and are a closely-guarded secret until the awards are announced. Also, the three cadets who raise the most funds will get an additional hour of flying time. |
Cadets Perform Community Service Early Saturday morning, the 24th of October, 24 cadets from 803 were busy cleaning up Grier Park. A suburban park located in Pierrefonds, the cadets were assisting the Horticultural Society with several tasks. Digging around trees, cutting the grass with gas-powered weed-whackers, wheel-barrowing and covering the ground with moss. Everyone had a good time, and a much-needed project was completed within hours. On a financial note, a generous and anonymous donation of $200 was given to the squadron for the work performed. Each cadet who was present, has therefore been allocated $8.33 towards their personal fund-raising goal. GOOD WORK EVERYONE. | Halloween Party The Halloween Party held at the squadron on October 31, 1998 was a great success. Much fun was had by all. Promotion Congratulations to F/Sgt H. Farag on his promotion to Warrant Officer, 2nd Class. As the CO pointed out "You all have to call him Sir, now". |
QPC Annual Assembly Attending the QPC Annual Assembly in Ste-Hyacinthe fron Oct 30-Nov 1/1998, were Capt. Daniele, Miss Sidhu, WO1 Bisson, F/Sgt G. Csizmar and Mr. Daviau. Everyone had the opportunity to enjoy WO1 Bisson play the pipes as he led the dignitaries into the banquet dinner on Saturday evening. |
