***************************************
It was
a sad day for Dr. Kelly Brackett as he looked around the room that
had
once been his office. After today, he'd no longer be the Chief of
Emergency
medicine at Rampart General Hospital. As he packed up the last of
his
things, Dr. Joe Early knocked on the door.
"Come
in, Joe." Kel invited. "You may as well get used to your new
office."
"I
never thought I'd see this day." The neurologist said, softly. "Kelly
Brackett,
resigning."
"What
else can I do, Joe?" Kel asked. "The administrator and I thought that
this
was the best thing for the hospital."
"I
just wish I could've done more." Joe said, sadly.
"Ah,
Joe, people like Dumont are stubborn. He believes he's right. Me, I
believe
I'm right. Hospital administration has a
lot more to lose than I do.
It's
about time I moved on anyway." Kel answered. "Dumont has money and
influence.
I can't afford to fight him, in court or anywhere else. I'd rather
leave
here with my reputation in tact than have it ruined in a long and drawn
out
battle."
"So,
you're just giving in." Joe understood. "What about Dixie?"
"What
about her?" Kel replied.
"Kel
she's in love with you." Joe told him.
"C'mon,
Joe!" Kel laughed. "Dix and I would never last! I don't have time for
her or
any other woman! Look, say good-bye to her for me."
"What
about the Paramedic program?" Joe asked. "What about Mike
Morton?"
"Dammit,
Joe! People around here have got to learn that nobody is
irreplaceable!"
Kel Yelled. "Even me! This hospital, this Paramedic program
and
everyone here will go on just fine without me!"
After a
minute, Kel slumped into a chair.
"Joe,
I'm sorry." Kel sighed. "This is hard enough for me. I don't wanna
leave
here, but what choice do I have? Either I go willingly or Dumont will
have me
fired."
With
that, Kel grabbed his stuff.
"The
time has come." Kel sighed.
"Need
a hand getting this stuff to your car?" Joe asked.
"Thanks,
Joe." Kel replied.
The men
left the office and headed toward the double doors. As they walked
down
the hall, they met up with various ER staff members. They all just went
about
their work as Kel passed by. Kel was grateful that Dix was taking a day
off.
Kel just couldn't have faced her just then.
As Kel
and Joe stepped out into the bright California sunshine, squad 51
pulled
up to the hospital. John Gage and Roy DeSoto, two of the Paramedics
got
out. Both had on their dress uniforms.
"Doc!"
Johnny called to Brackett.
"Roy,
John, why the dress uniforms?" Brackett asked as Roy retrieved a gift
wrapped
box from one of the squad's compartments.
"Dr.
Brackett, on behalf on station 51 and the Los Angeles County fire
department,
we present this gift as a token of our thanks for all that you
have
done for the Paramedic program." Roy said. "Johnny?"
"Dr.
Brackett, six months ago, Fireman DeSoto came to you with a simple idea.
He wanted to train firemen to be
Paramedics." Johnny said. "Despite your
initial
resistance, you helped to get the bill passed that allows us to
operate
today as Paramedics on MICU units such as squad 51." Johnny took
over.
"This gift is our way of saying thanks."
Roy
handed the package to the doctor. He blinked back a few tears as he
accepted
and opened it. Inside was a helmet with the number 51 on the front,
along
with a Paramedic pin.
"You
guys." Kel grinned.
"Let
in be known from this day forward that you are an honorary Paramedic on
squad
51. You can serve with us anytime." Roy said, then shook hands with
Kel.
"Good luck, Doctor."
"Doc,
best of luck to ya." Johnny said as he then shook hands with Brackett.
"Thanks,
Guys." Kel smiled, wiping away his own tears, then getting in his
car and
leaving as they all watched.
"Things
won't be the same without him here." Johnny remarked once Brackett
was
gone. "I hope that ass, Dumont is happy!"
"Johnny,
there are no real winners in something like this." Early replied.
"C'mon,
I'll buy you two dinner."
The
Paramedics followed the doctor back into the hospital.
