Wolf Mtn sits on the Eastern Edge of the Ochoco Mountains near the rugged Black Canyon Wilderness Location:Ochoco N.F., Paulina("Rager")R.D. Elevation:6483ft(6590ft with tower) Staffing Status:Paid Position, USFS Staffer:Fern Ritchie--Has been off and on(but mostly on)lookouts in the Ochocos for over 15 years now. Structure:THIS IS ONE OF THE COOLEST LOOKOUT STRUCTURES IN THE UNITED STATES!!! To my knowledge it is the tallest live-in tower(107') in the United States and perhaps in the world. Other towers boast higher perches but they are always topped with small (8'by8'or7'by7')cabs. Wolf, on the other hand, boasts a full size L-4 cab with bed, stove, propane heater etc. NEWS FLASH!:$68,000 has been allocated for a huge facelift on Wolf Mtn. New flooring, roof, shutters, lightning protection system, windows and electric winch. Repairs to be made on tower include rebracing and guide cables. The ground garage will also be worked on. This will be a huge project and will be undertaken for the summer of 2000. The lookout staffer will continue to staff the lookout during the renovations-should be a noisy summer but Wolf Mtn will be lookin' good for 2001!
