This very fire-busy lookout is tucked in the Eastern shadow of the pristine Cascade mountains and in addition to wildland fires, also provides essential urban interface protection for the town of Lapine, Oregon Location:Crescent R.D., Deschutes N.F. Elevation:7033ft Staffing Status:paid position, USFS Staffer:Jim Shotwell:Jim is approaching year number THIRTY!!!!as a lookout on the Deschutes! This is his 21st year on Odell. He has also staffed Wanoga Butte, Lava Butte, and Black Butte. He lives in Bend in his off time and is a professional photographer. Structure:Greatly modified R-6 flat on 30' tower Historical Structures:Original L-4 lookout built in 1932; New R-6 flat building in1961, severe remodel of this lookout was done in the early 90's-- New oak floor, pine roof, customized windows etc.! Legal:T.24.S R.7.E S.22 se/se Rental:not available for rental Season:Approx.Mid May to end of October Directions:From the town of Crescent, travel west on Hwy 61(7 miles), take a left(south) on FS rd 5815, travel 6 miles to gate, walk .7 mile to the lookout
