Directions to East Butte Lookout(provuded by Paul and Chris Boring From Bend-the shortest route... 1.From HWY 97, take HWY 20 east towards Burns. Go Approx. 19 miles. As you come down Horse Ridge Summit, take the second right on county rd 23/25. Watch your odometer as your spur road turn is 9 miles from here. Stay on the pavement until you see F.S. road 2510 on your left, turn onto F.S. road 2510 watching the spur road sign numbers. Nine miles down on 2510 turn right on spur road 600, stay on the 600 road to its end. Then turn Right-this is the 1850. Continue for 2 miles bearing left and staying on the skirt of East Butte. Disregard any roads to the right. This 1850 red gravel turns into 220. Continute bearing left and road turns to red gravel which is the 700. This climbs the butte and becomes very washboardy. At the "Y" turn left up the 750 past the gate and follow the road to the top. The gate is usually locked. Call ahead at (541)480-2378 or walk the last 1.5 miles to the tower. From LAPINE-- The most paved roads, but the most miles In Lapine, watch for the Sugar Pine Cafe on the east side of the hiway. Turn east on Finely Butte RD. Stay on this paved road, which becomes F.S. road 22, for 26 miles. At the stop sign turn left on F.S. road 18(a gravel road). Cross over Lava Pass(a small rise in the road) going past RD. 2270, stay on Road 18 until you turn right on spur rd. 200.(if you pass Cina Hat Guard Station, you've gone too far, go back) Turn a sharp right on spur road 220. Now look at the bend directions starting at the ** Scenic Route through Newberry Crater On HWY 97,(approx 5 miles north of Lapine; approx 18 miles south of Bend) turn east on county road 21 towards East and Paulina Lakes. You will have to pay an admession charge to the National Scenic area.(The side-trip out of Paulina Resort and up Paulina Peak is worth it & at 7800 feet it's the 2nd highest elevation road in Oregon. Rest rooms at top. Looking East from the peak you can see East Butte. We're the right hand of the two cinder cones. Give us a mirror flash before coming down. Stay on road 21 going past both lakes and out of the crater. You've now travelled approx. 8 miles on dusty washboard road out of the crater. Turn right at the stop sign onto road 18. Go approx. 2 miles and turn left on road 1850 at the East Butte sign. Turn right on spur 220. Now look at the Bend directions starting at the ** CAMPINGThere's no camping on East Butte, but you are welcome to use China Hat Campground, on road 18, next to China Hat Guard Station. A toilet, picnic tables and camp sites provided at no charge, but there may be no water. This campground is seldom used except in hunting season. |
