We thought perhaps we should tell people why the rain barrel was chosen for our logo. You may not think the old fashioned wooden barrel has much to do with social work, but consider how social workers are always thinking about prevention. We watch for the opportunity to make a difference in children's lives. Note how using the rain barrel made the most of a rainy day.... |

There was a time when the rain barrel was a familiar site. Before indoor plumbing, when homesteaders had to worry about the well going dry, it was a common sense practice to catch rain water running down the roof by channeling it from gutters and a downspout into a large wooden barrel. This was a preventative measure, for the rain water could be used for washing clothes, cleaning house, or watering the flowers--without wasting the precious well water. |
Look down my rain barrel, Slide down my cellar door, And we'll be jolly friends For ever more!. |
When we "catch the child" doing something good, we reinforce his good behavior with praise. We encourage parents to do this as well, helping them foster the positive self-concept they want for their children. More examples of preventative measures that school social workers employ are: Encouraging the development of social skills Teaching conflict resolution Educating for drug prevention Educating for respect and bully-ing prevention Promoting communication between the home and the school. Teaching healthy ways to release stress . |
