the late, Mr. Don Elliot Heald of Atlanta, GA
Don Elliot, as he has been known throughout the broadcast industry, was known as the "VOICE" of the Audichron Time-Weather-Temperature Service. His voice was heard answering hundreds of calls daily from people wanting to know the correct time in cities throughout the United States and abroad. He was probably the most recognized "VOICE" of Time/Frequency Station WWV, Fort Collins, Colorado, the radio station of the National Institute of Standards and Technology, headquartered in Boulder.
Don was originally from Massachusetts, but came to Atlanta via Lakeland, Florida. He graduated from the University of Florida at Gainesville where he was active in many extra-curricular activities. His radio began when he accepted a position at WRUF in Gainesville, after graduation, and he remained for three years. He did post-graduate work at Emory University in Atlanta and was associated with WSB, WSB-FM and WSB-TV Channel 2 in Atlanta for years. Later on, he became Vice President, Cox Broadcasting Corporation and General Manager of WSB-TV.
Don has been a member and past president of the Kiwanis Club of Northside Atlanta, a Vestryman of the Episcopal Cathedral of St. Philip and a former Jr. Warden. His hobbies have been woodcraft and antique cars.
Don Elliot Heald passed away on Thursday, February 19, 2009.
