Vivi is a young, serious black mage. Unlike the common Alexandrian Black mages, he is tiny, the size of a 9-year-old human, and dressed in blue. Afraid of heights and with a tendency towards absent-mindedness, Vivi is as lovable as he is powerful.
Vivi grew up near Treno under the care of his adoptive grandfather, a Qu named Quan. After Quan's death, he catches a ride to Alexandria with a man from Treno, intending to see the play "I Want to be Your Canary." When he discovers his ticket is a fake, he instead sneaks in with Prince Puck of Burmecia. During the play, Vivi somehow gets entangled in Zidane's affairs, ending up accompanying him on his adventures.
Vivi later discovers that like the black mage "dolls" he sees in Dali, he was created from the Mist. This sends him into a sort of identity crisis, in which he wonders who he really is. Later, he visits the Black Mage Village and discovers that the mages don't have very long lifespans. He sinks into depression until Zidane's kindness cheers him up.
Finally, at the end of his adventure, Vivi discovers that he, being of an earlier prototype, has a longer life-span than most black mages. He grows up, eventually having children of his own.
