The blundering fool
Through his intense loyalty

Steiner is the stuffy, old-fashioned captain of the foolish, lazy, and disorganized Pluto Knights of Alexandria. Serious and proper, he is incredibly loyal to his kingdom and mistresses, Queen Brahne and Princess Garnet. He is in love with his rival, Beatrix, the much more competent general in charge of Alexandria's all-female force of soldiers.
When Garnet escapes with Zidane, Steiner is trapped into going along. While it takes him a long time for him to trust Zidane, whom Steiner sees as a "scoundrel and thief," the two eventually gain each other's respect. Steiner still has to work on his opinion towards commoners, though.
After Brahne kidnaps Garnet and extracts her Eidolons, Steiner realizes that his queen is not all she seems. He leaves the service of Brahne, instead devoting all of his loyalty to Garnet and Alexandria. After Garnet ascends to the throne, he and his beloved, Beatrix, defend Alexandria with all their might.
