An example of Maps/Tranference in my Life. Transference, as defined by M. Scott Peck, is when we use an out of date Weltanschaungg(world view) and apply it to our life today to situations in which it is inappropriate or useless. When you use transference, it usually makes whatever situation you are in worse. The bad part is that in order to avoid transference, we have to constantly revise our world map, a laborious undertaking which is why so many people suffer from transference, that don't want to give the effort needed to update their world map. AN example of transference in my life and, I'm sure, in the lives of many SLUH students occured during my Freshman year. To me, grade school was a joke. I could put in minimal effort and receive straight A's, and because of that, I severely underestimated the workload needed in order to acheive the same calibur of grades at SLUH. My study habits were poor and my writing was sloppy because that was acceptable in grade school. Because of this, my first quarter grades suffered, but once I revised my map, my grades picked up once again. Unfortunately, I have resorted several times back to my outdated world view whenever I become lazy. If I don't feel like studying for a test, I sometimes ignore studying and rely on my intelligence to pass the test, just like in grade school. These recent examples of transference show that revision of your world map is an ongoing process, and I need to keep constantly revising. |
