St. JOSEPH FEAST AT QORMI - MALTA

BY GEORGE BORG

This is about the feast of St. Joseph, father of the whole universal church, that is celebrated every first Sunday of May at the parish Church of St. George in Qormi. The procession starts at around 6.00 p.m.

The painting that is on the altar dedicated to the saint, was made in 1885 instead of another one that is preserved in the Parish Museum. This painted was made by Giuseppe Cali and was paid by the ConFraternity of St. Joseph. In the painting the figure of St. Joseph is big fejn he is shown as the leader of the Universal Church. Sitting on a cloud there is Jesus as a child surrounded by Angels while under his feet there is a passage that symbolises the World with St. Peter's Church in the center.

This wooden statue was made in Bolzano, Italy and was used the first time for the procession of 1963 and was paid by the ConFraternity of St. Joseph. This has replaced an older one, made from Guzeppi Cilia in papier-manche, in 1908, who paid for this statue Ganni & Guzeppi Coleiro. This old statue has even been replaced from another one of which was given to the Institute Bonnici.
