Cycads
To my knowledge there are 3 native cycads to South East Queensland that are fairly common:
- Lepidozamia peroffskyana
- Macrozamia lucida
- Macrozamia moorei
Note that the 2 Macrozamia's can hybridize making identification very tricky.
Diagnostic Features
Cones
Lepidozamia only has one cone, macrozamia can have many.
Lepidozamia cones appear from the centre of the leaf crown, macrozamia appear to be born on spikes.
Leaves
Macozamia leaflets are yellow at their attachment point to the leaf. Lepidozamia leaves are uniformin colour and more uniform in width than Macrozamia.
Trunk
Leaf scars on trunk are more distinct, and trunk usually more slender in Lepidozamia.
