Day 4 - Friday 16th December

Initially we felt we needed a rest day and so unlike yesterday we didn't get going until 10 am and more like 11 am. Up we went towards Mt Scorpio. We had some difficulty getting down to Lake Sirona as we weren't sure if the chimney into the gully was the correct route and it was quite difficult. Our initial plan was to reach Promontory Lake but Roan was after adventure so along the way the plan changed to a bivy in some mountainous crag somewhere. The lake campsites looked a little boggy but the lakes especially Promintory Lake were very scenic. At 490 183 which is the plateau between the Phoenix and Centaur Ridge we found a shelterd area of the moors and this spot turned out to be our best campsite over the two weeks. The idea of no campsite until Lake Roseanne was completely smashed. We were protected and had a source of water amongst the pools on the plateau. This section of the walk was talked down as being less spectacular by John Chapman's guidebook but we didn't think so. It turned out to be another wonderful day and perhaps the boost to the spirit I required to desire pushing on to Federation Peak regardless of the conditions.
