Day 42 - Franklin River to Rame Head
Back to the double hut approach today as the trip to Giants
was only 13.7km from Franklin Campsite. The first rest was taken at around
7 am as I crossed Franklin River on Sapper's
Bridge. The walk from Brainy Cut-Off Road until a few hundred metres past the
tree Top Walk had the most marvellous Karri and Tingle Forest yet seen on the
walk. The morning was spent amongst giants. Just after 9 am I reached the tree
top walk undertook the 600m walk amongst the Karri/Tingle tree canopy and was
not disappointed even if I had to contend with Grey Nomads and Deutschlander
folk. The admission was $6.00.
Afterwards I walked on arriving at the Giant's campsite at 10
am for morning tea. After goading Rone to catch me in the red book (to no avail
as he elected to stay a day or two behind me) I left at
10:30. From Giants campsite in the hills until Conspicuous Beach was reached the
vegetation changed in distinct communities from fertile soils supporting forest
to granite montane heath and then coastal heath. Happened to see 1 tiger snake,
some wallabies and a few blow flies along the way.
There was a steep climb up to Conspicuous Cliff and then a short walk to Scenic Rame Head. I say scenic as the hut itself has a Perspex window from which Point Irwin can be viewed. From Rame Head I took the 2.5km return walk to the nearby beach on the other side of Rame Head. It was another very scenic day. For the 8th time I had a hut to myself.
