BLRSV Quake3 Arena

Welcome to the information page for the BLRSV Quake3 Servers!

I'll assume you found me through GameSpy or some similar service. For the moment I'm running a single QuakeIII Arena server from a well connected site in Palo Alto, California:

  • BLRSV#2 DM 6 map cycle
I'm running this server because QuakeIII is rather fun. But I'm also studying the IP (Internet) traffic that flow in and out of QuakeIII servers when lots of people are playing. I'm interested in what sort of network traffic loads exist on servers and IP access links, and how these loads fluctuate over days, weeks, and months. Someday I'll post more details of my ongoing results - should be interesting to those of you whooo have an IP networking background, or are just wondering how much bandwidth QuakeIII really does use on your dial-up, cable modem, or DSL link....

(From mid-Feb to early May there were two servers at the site - "BLRSV#1 DM 4 map cycle" and
"BLRSV#2 DM 4 map cycle".)

The Maps from mid-May 2001:

BLRSV#2 runs the following map sequence:

  • q3dm17, timelimit 10, fraglimit 30
  • q3dm6, timelimit 20, fraglimit 50
  • q3dm11, timelimit 20, fraglimit 50
  • q3dm14, timelimit 20, fraglimit 50
  • q3dm12, timelimit 20, fraglimit 50
  • q3tourney4, timelimit 20, fraglimit 40
The Maps from mid-Feb to early May 2001 were:

BLRSV#1 ran the following map sequence:

  • q3tourney5, timelimit 10, fraglimit 30
  • q3tourney3, timelimit 10, fraglimit 30
  • q3dm15, timelimit 15, fraglimit 40
  • q3tourney4, timelimit 15, fraglimit 40
BLRSV#2 ran the following map sequence:
  • q3dm17, timelimit 8, fraglimit 30
  • q3dm6, timelimit 15, fraglimit 40
  • q3dm11, timelimit 15, fraglimit 40
  • q3dm14, timelimit 15, fraglimit 40
The host:

Right now my server host is a 600MHz Celeron processor with 128MB RAM and 20GB drive running FreeBSD 4.2. The standard Linux v1.17 QuakeIII server code runs under FreeBSD's linux-emulation mode. I hope to keep the servers running 24 hours a day for at least a few months, with short shutdowns (no more than a few minutes) once a week to close and archive the logfiles.

The network:

As of Feb.15th 2001 external IP connectivity is provided through a shared, but lightly loaded, T1 line from a local ISP. (The server itself runs 100baseT through a local Ethernet switch to the small router/firewall feeding the T1 line.)

The host's IP address is 192.147.236.5, and the server is on port 27960. However, this information might change - best to find them through Gamespy if you can't get through directly.

Interim results:
