the Insect form

Armadillidium vulgare
a cleric of The Divine Order officiating at The Kiss
The Insects resemble in form insects on earth, but they resemble even more two species which aren't insects. Armadillidium vulgare and Glomeris marginata are the Pill woodlouse and the Pill millipede. Woodlice are crustaceans and so are distantly related to insects; insects evolved from crustaceans. Millipedes are more closely related to insects. Both can roll themselves up into a ball, as can the Giga-Shadow.
The Giga-Shadow is an Insect and rolls up towards the end of episode 1.4 Giga-Shadow. Then we realise the significance of the symbol of The Divine Order, as seen on the cloaks of the clerics and at the beginning and end of each episode. The form is reminiscent of a device in the aperture of cameras (the diaphragm) which controls the amount of light let in.
The cloak of His Divine Shadow is reminiscent of an insect carapace in its form and because it is shiny and black. It seems to be imbued with the Insect consciousness and can reform around the new Divine Shadow at The Kiss. It is segmented, especially the hood. Physically, His Divine Shadow is human flesh, but the cloak is like an exoskeleton.
Perhaps His Divine Shadow's cloak was originally just like the cloak of a monk, but over thousands of years it came to resemble more and more an insect form.
These forms should have alerted humanity to the true nature of His Divine Shadow, that he/it is an Insect intelligence. But humans had long lost the knowledge that they must have had during the Insect Wars.
